Hundreds of people interested in becoming automotive technicians are expected to attend a “Future Tech” event Thursday night to learn more about the high-demand transportation industry, according to Universal Technical Institute-Long Beach officials who organized the event.
“Future Tech” events are held offsite at a leading local employer and are designed to raise awareness of the ongoing demand for skilled technicians in the transportation industry and give students, potential students and their parents a real world snapshot of what today’s industry expects of its technicians, and why industry-recognized training can help with career mobility,” said Larry Hohl, campus president of the soon-to-open UTI-Long Beach.
The Long Beach campus will become the third in California when it opens its doors on August 17, offering training as automotive, diesel, collision repair, motorcycle and marine technicians, officials said.
More than 300 people are expected to attend, including 100 of the 140 registered Long Beach campus students, as well as 200 persons interested in enrolling in the school. Officials said they range from 18 to 30 years of age.
The demand for auto mechanics is expected to grow nearly 20 percent nationally in the next few years, according to a press release. Currently, 27,000 auto tech jobs open every year around the country.
The event will feature a tour of Velocity Truck Rental & Leasing—a state-of-the-art facility that provides emergency road service and contract maintenance to customers in addition to truck rental and leasing, its website states.
It is also where 95 percent of the green diesel trucks for the Port of Long Beach come from, according to the release.
UTI also receives technicians from Lexus, Mercedes and Toyota every year who want to keep up with the technology, according to the release.
“It is an investment that pays off for both the company and its employees,” the release states.
The “Future Tech” event will take place Thursday, June 25, from 6:30PM to 8:30PM at Velocity Truck Rental & Leasing, 18900 South Susana Road, Rancho Dominguez.
