The city has added new traffic signals and LED safety lights to the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and 51st Street, and the community is invited to help activate them on Tuesday, October 25 at 11:00AM, the city announced today.
“The addition of this traffic signal will improve walkability in the neighborhood, access to public transportation, and safety for pedestrians and bicyclists,” said Councilmember Al Austin in a statement. “This new traffic signal is the result of the persistent efforts of many residents, including seniors from Carmelitos and the adjacent neighborhood, raising concerns about the need for a safer intersection.”
The LED safety lights will provide increased visibility and safety, according to the city.
The intersection is within the perimeters of the future Daisy Avenue Bike Boulevard Project, set to span 9.5 miles between downtown and North Long Beach, while the area is also home to Atlantic Plaza Park, the Carmelitos Kindergarten Head Start Program and the Growing Experience Urban Farm Stand.
