LBPD Officer Wounds Man Waving Replica Gun

An officer-involved shooting occurred Monday evening after an LBPD officer responded to a call about a man with a gun at the 800 block of Washington Place.

At approximately 6PM, officers responding to the call were advised that a male subject was reportedly waving a gun and threatening to shoot people. During an encounter with a man who matched the description of the gun wielding subject, and officer opened fire, striking the suspect, who was later identified as Tyrone Davis, a 27-year-old Long Beach resident.

After being injured, Davis retreated into an apartment but surrendered shortly after. Davis was transported to a local hospital and is listed in stable condition. Detectives recovered a replica firearm from the scene. He is currently being held without bail as the investigation continues because of a parole violation.

Investigators don’t believe that the apartment that Davis fled to was his home, but they do think he occasionally stays there. They will present their case to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office where Davis may face criminal threats threatening someone with a replica firearm charges. Davis is also facing witness intimidation charges stemming from an unrelated case.

The officer-involved shooting is the second in a three day span after a nearly three month lapse since a pitbull was shot and killed by police gunfire May 1. Saturday night, LBPD officers fired at a woman who was allegedly standing over her husband with a hatchet when they responded to a domestic issue.

As with all officer involved shootings that result in injury or death, the LA District Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent investigation into the shooting. Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact the Long Beach Police Homicide Detectives Mark McGuire and Greg Krabbe at (562) 570-7244, texting an anonymous tip to CRIMES (274637) or visiting www.lacrimestoppers.org.
