UPDATE: Man Killed in Hit-and-Run Collision was Attempting Suicide, Police Say

UPDATE | A man allegedly attempting to commit suicide by lying on a Long Beach roadway was struck and killed by a vehicle Monday morning, according to a release from the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

Officers were originally called to an attempted suicide call near East 7th Street and Redondo Avenue at about 1:17AM on Monday, April 25, the release stated.

“The call indicated a male subject was jumping in front of traffic, in an attempt to be hit, and eventually lied down in the roadway,” officials stated. “A moment later, officers were notified that the individual was struck by a vehicle and the vehicle fled the scene.”

The man—identified as 27-year-old William Mendoza of Buena Park—was found not breathing by officers, near East 7th Street and Loma Avenue. He was determined dead at the scene.

According to a preliminary investigation Mendoza was in the roadway, outside of a crosswalk, when he was struck by a white four-door sedan.

Police are looking for the motorist who they believe was driving a 2006-2010 white Chrysler 300.

The investigation remains ongoing.

4/25/26 at 11:08AM | Long Beach police are looking for a white Chrysler 300 possibly involved in a hit-and-run collision Monday morning that left a male pedestrian dead, authorities said.

Officers were dispatched to the 3600 block of 7th Street at 1:15AM on Monday, April 25 regarding a traffic collision involving a vehicle and pedestrian, according to Marlene Arrona of the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

A man was found on the street and determined dead at the scene, she said.

The victim was later identified as William Mendoza, 27, of Buena Park by coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

The driver fled the scene in the vehicle.

Collision Investigation detectives believe the suspect vehicle could possibly be a 2006-2010 white Chrysler 300.

The investigation remains ongoing.
