Hit-and-Run Driver Arrested, Young Passenger Critically Wounded Following Morning Car Crash

A male driver suspected of fleeing after he collided with another vehicle, critically injuring a young female passenger, was arrested in West Long Beach Tuesday morning.

The crash happened on the 2800 block of Fashion Avenue at about 8:38AM.

Officials said Long Beach paramedics transported a young female passenger in critical condition to a local hospital.

Arriving officers learned that one of the drivers fled on foot and immediately searched for the suspect, eventually finding him and taking him into custody.

Authorities said the suspect was driving a silver 2000 Honda Accord north on Fashion Avenue at a high rate of speed, failed to stop at a stop sign and struck a black 2012 Toyota Camry, occupied by an adult male driver and two passengers, and two unoccupied parked vehicles.

The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Long Beach resident Darren Israel Briley, ran from the scene.

He was booked for driving under the influence, hit and run, and a probation violation. He is being held in Long Beach City Jail.

Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) detectives are investigating the incident.
