Arizona Man, Hawthorne Woman Win 2016 Long Beach Marathon

An Arizona Man and a Hawthorne-born woman won their respective races at the Long Beach Marathon yesterday, both hurtling past the finish line in less than three hours, amid heat hovering between 88 and 90 degrees.

Runners splashed water over their sweaty faces at various water stations, while family and friends cheered and waved oversized, floppy signs.

Chip Jordan, 26, won the men’s race in 2:24:47, less than a minute in front of second place finisher Abraham Christian Noguez, 33 (2:25:22 finishing time) and just under two minutes faster than third place finisher Wilson Chepkwony, 35 (2:26:08).

Mary Akor, 40, was the first woman to cross the finish line, clocking 2:46:49 for the 26.2 mile race. She was almost 10 minutes faster than second place finisher Anna Corrigan, 25 (2:54:55) and Brittany Lee, 28 (2:56:13).

The weekend’s events attracted over 20,000 cyclists and runners and 20,000 supporters, according to race organizers.

Meanwhile, 16-year-old Jonah Martinez of Long Beach stole the first place 5k men’s finish with a time of 17:59 and 47-year-old Elizabeth Guerrini won the women’s division with a time of 20:44.

Long Beach’s own Phil Schneider, 24, won the men’s half marathon (1:06:34), and Simi Valley’s Liz Blackwell, 33, won the women’s division.
