Who is Rabbi Pickle? Well, you’ll just have to find out at this “very special Pickling Party,” where (surprise!) you’ll learn how to make your own pickles.<\/p>\n

The party is put on by Beach Hillel<\/a>, the Center for Jewish Student Life at Cal State Long Beach that also serves five other schools, including Long Beach City, Cypress and Cerritos colleges, so if you’re a student, or alum, this event is for you. If you’re just someone interested in the process of kosher pickling, this could be up your alley, too.<\/p>\n

The pickle party is just one event happening during Jewish Heritage Week at CSULB, where students, alum and community members are invited to partake in learning “the traditional way of making pickles, a staple of Eastern European Jewish cuisine,” said organizer Ally Levine.<\/p>\n

Another great thing: <\/strong>We’re still not sure what makes this such a “special” pickling party. The fact that a pickling party exists at all is, to us, quite special already.<\/p>\n

Giving us a moment’s pause:<\/strong> Okay, so, Rabbi Pickle’s real name is Rabbi Shmuel Marcus who is a pickle master and will be leading the class. And if you’re wondering what makes a pickle kosher… It’s the kosher salt, and also, the absence of preservatives.<\/p>\n

“The non-kosher pickles are the non-refrigerated pickles that sit on store shelves and are packed with preservatives,” Marcus told the Orange County Register<\/a> in 2007. “After tasting the varieties,\u00a0pickle\u00a0makers will be able to make their own\u00a0pickles\u00a0with dill, garlic, salt and\u00a0pickling spice, to taste.”<\/p>\n
