Posting subject to approval.<\/em><\/p>\n<h1>Virtually Pets<\/h1>\n<p>It\u2019s the last column before Christmas, Chanukah\u2019s about to celebrate its final night, and Kwanzaa\u2019s showing up the day after Christmas on December 26. So it\u2019s time to head to our shelter or a rescue and give gifts. Operation Santa Paws has got it under control for the pets (see <strong>Things to Do, Pets to Support)<\/strong>, and all those toys, goodies and supplies will be well appreciated. The ultimate gift, of course, would be a loving, forever home, which is something that each one has been lacking up to now.<\/p>\n<p>Here are five candidates at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.longbeach.gov\/acs\/pets\/adoptions\/\">Long Beach Animal Care Services<\/a>, located in the P. D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village, 7700 East Spring Street (at the entrance to El Dorado Park\u2014no parking fee for Village visitors). There are many more inside. If you\u2019re thinking of adding a pet to the family, please stop at the shelter first. Room is limited, and none of them should go before their time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-57105\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Joy_.JPG\" alt=\"Joy \" width=\"620\" height=\"415\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Joy<\/strong> (ID#A600209) is a 4-year-old female domestic shorthair, with tabby patches. She\u2019s curious and sweet, and would <i>so <\/i>love her life to live up to her name!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-57106\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Slinky_.JPG\" alt=\"Slinky \" width=\"620\" height=\"415\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Slinky<\/strong> (ID#A600036) is a 13-year-old domestic shorthair senior, already spayed, very endearing and ready to go home. Slinky\u2019s not exactly slinky\u2014she\u2019s a big girl at 18 pounds\u2014but with a better diet than the owner who surrendered her provided, she may also live up to her name. He\u2019s a 3-year-old schnauzer mix. He\u2019s friendly and curious as all get-out.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-57108\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Fennel_.JPG\" alt=\"Fennel \" width=\"620\" height=\"415\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fennel<\/strong> (ID#A599537) was found wandering the streets with his \u201csister,\u201d <strong>Saffron<\/strong> (ID#A599536)\u2014and she\u2019s available, too. Fennel\u2019s estimated age is 5 years; he\u2019s a loving, stocky \u201clow-rider\u201d type who could chase a ball for hours. Saffron\u2019s just a cuddler. They\u2019re both healthy, happy and ready to go home.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-57109\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Elvis_Parsley_.JPG\" alt=\"Elvis Parsley \" width=\"620\" height=\"415\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Elvis Parsley <\/strong>(ID#(A600469)\u2014and is that a great name, or what?\u2014is a 1-year-old American shorthair male rabbit. ACS gets a number of rabbits\u2014they\u2019re dumped on the street or at the shelter when their owners realize that they need special care and accommodations. If you love rabbits and can provide these necessities (do <i>not<\/i> let them near the Christmas-tree-light cords), Elvis and his backup band of bunnies would love you to love them tender.<\/p>\n<p>Remember\u2014pets are not presents. They\u2019re not commodities to be wrapped up in a package with holes poked in them or sprung as surprises on someone who may not appreciate them. Besides, a person and a pet should choose each other.<\/p>\n<p>Having said that, there\u2019s a wonderful way to give a pet as a gift and give the gift of a loving home to a pet who had the misfortune not to have one. First, of course, check with the recipient\u2019s entire household\u2014and landlord, if applicable\u2014to be certain that one will be welcome there.
