{"id":1161,"date":"2017-10-09T23:30:02","date_gmt":"2017-10-09T23:30:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lbpost.com\/articles\/life\/college-radio-day-at-lbcc-honors-vip-records-owner-kelvin-anderson\/"},"modified":"2017-10-09T23:30:02","modified_gmt":"2017-10-09T23:30:02","slug":"college-radio-day-at-lbcc-honors-vip-records-owner-kelvin-anderson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/college-radio-day-at-lbcc-honors-vip-records-owner-kelvin-anderson","title":{"rendered":"College Radio Day at LBCC Honors VIP Records Owner Kelvin Anderson"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-56211\" style=\"vertical-align: top;\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Kelvin.jpg\" alt=\"Kelvin\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Photos by Michael Garcia.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Long Beach City College celebrated College Radio Day Friday by honoring World Famous VIP Records owner Kelvin Anderson for his contributions to the Long Beach community and music scene.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson has been the owner of the record store, located on Pacific Coast Highway, for nearly 40 years, with the shop\u2019s sign becoming an iconic symbol of Long Beach and west coast hip hop when it appeared in the music video for Snoop Dogg\u2019s 1993 hit single \u201cWho Am I (What\u2019s My Name).\u201d<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; float: left;\">\n<div style=\"width: 100px; height: 100px; background-image: url('images\/matt\/vip-records\/101_3099.png'); background-size: cover; background-position: center center; float: left; margin-right: 30px; display:none;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<p> <small style=\"font-weight: lighter;\">RELATED<\/small> <\/p>\n<h2 ><a onclick=\"ga('send', 'event', 'Related Link', 'click', 'Realted Link v1');\" href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/news\/city\/fate-of-iconic-record-store-sign-at-center-of-struggle-between-owner-and-city\/\">UPDATE: City, VIP Records Operator Reach Agreement Over Iconic Sign<\/a><\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<p>\u201cCollege radio is a place where careers are launched from,\u201d Anderson told the Post. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of people that would never get the opportunity to be a part of a regular radio program and they can get their music played.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Long Beach Vice Mayor Rex Richardson was on hand to award Anderson for his accomplishments, and other speakers shared their thoughts on how Anderson had helped them by providing the resources to launch their careers. Local artists then played their music for the audience.<\/p>\n<p>Tromaine Ellis, better known as \u201cThe LBC Photographer\u201d recounted how he came to Long Beach City College to study photography and film and how Anderson let him film a movie in his store\u2019s parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKelvin Anderson allows you to do whatever you need to do, if you have any type of skill, he\u2019ll let you do it,\u201d Ellis said during the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson hopes to <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/news\/city\/fate-of-iconic-record-store-sign-at-center-of-struggle-between-owner-and-city\/\">build a museum named World Famous Black Music Museum and Creative Arts Center and has been in talks with city officials about ways to preserve the sign<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-56212\" style=\"vertical-align: middle;\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Rex_and_Kelvin.jpg\" alt=\"Rex and Kelvin\" width=\"620\" height=\"447\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Vice Mayor Rex Richardson (right) presents Kelvin Anderson of World Vamous VIP Records with a certificate of recognition for his contributions to Long Beach.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the years I had people walk up to me and say, \u2018Did you know I was one of those kids in the back of VIP?\u2019\u201d Anderson said. \u201cWe had a recording studio and a stage, and we hope the museum can recreate that experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to have the history from 8-track to the hologram. I can imagine a great grandma coming into the museum with her great grandkid and explaining to him what an 8-track player is. As they go through the museum the great grandkid explains to her what a hologram is,\u201d Anderson said as he laughed.<\/p>\n<p>He also talked about how important social media is now for up and coming artists and how the music industry has changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSocial media is the key to success for artists launching their career,\u201d Anderson told the Post. \u201cIt evens the playing field. Even the major record companies depend on social media to promote and sell their records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for the future of World Famous VIP Records, Anderson said that the physical part of the business has disappeared.
