The State of the Arts 2017 <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/life\/arts-culture\/annual-state-of-the-arts-to-honor-six-contributors-to-the-cultural-spirit-of-long-beach\/\">honorees<\/a> were given their awards during the event to enthusiastic applause from the audience.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; float: left;\">\n<div style=\"width: 100px; height: 100px; background-image: url('images\/asia\/stateofthearts17.jpg'); background-size: cover; background-position: center center; float: left; margin-right: 30px; display:none;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<p> <small style=\"font-weight: lighter;\">RELATED<\/small> <\/p>\n<h2 ><a onclick=\"ga('send', 'event', 'Related Link', 'click', 'Realted Link v1');\" href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/life\/arts-culture\/annual-state-of-the-arts-to-honor-six-contributors-to-the-cultural-spirit-of-long-beach\/\">Annual State of the Arts to Honor Contributors to the Cultural Spirit of Long Beach<\/a><\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no question that one of the really strong shifts for the arts council has been this idea and this passion to be inclusive of the entire arts spectrum and I think that Griselda, the board, the entire team has done such a great job ensuring that the arts represent everyone in Long Beach, and I\u2019m really proud of that,\u201d Mayor Robert Garcia said during his address.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-56173\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC_0159.JPG\" alt=\"DSC 0159\" width=\"620\" height=\"415\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Garcia iterated that the most significant arts initiative over the last year was passing and adopting the <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/life\/arts-culture\/mayor-s-percent-for-the-arts-program-moves-forward-with-unanimous-vote\/\">Percent for the Arts program<\/a>, where now, moving forward, 1 percent of funding will be taken off the top of all public projects in Long Beach.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; float: left;\">\n<div style=\"width: 100px; height: 100px; background-image: url('images\/asia\/stateofthearts16\/DSC_0136.JPG'); background-size: cover; background-position: center center; float: left; margin-right: 30px; display:none;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<p> <small style=\"font-weight: lighter;\">RELATED<\/small> <\/p>\n<h2 ><a onclick=\"ga('send', 'event', 'Related Link', 'click', 'Realted Link v1');\" href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/life\/arts-culture\/mayor-s-percent-for-the-arts-program-moves-forward-with-unanimous-vote\/\">Mayor&#8217;s &#8220;Percent for the Arts&#8221; Program Moves Forward With Unanimous Vote<\/a><\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<p>\u201cWe just launched it, we\u2019re just now collecting the money, so we\u2019re very anxious to see how much there\u2019s going to be in it this first year,\u201d Garcia said. \u201cThe real impact will be when we add the one percent to not just public projects, but to private projects. We can literally raise an unprecedented amount of money for our museums, for groups like the symphony, for our performance groups, for our galleries, if we ask all this great development happening to pitch in a little bit more for the arts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-34842\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/DSC_0201.JPG\" alt=\"DSC 0201\" width=\"620\" height=\"415\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Garcia also spoke of how <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/life\/arts-culture\/in-pictures-pow-wow-long-beach-2017\/\"><em>Pow! Wow! Long Beach<\/em><\/a> has changed the public\u2019s perception of street art, proudly noting how the city has gradually become an \u201coutdoor museum\u201d over the past three years thanks to the internationally-known mural festival. Long Beach 2017 Brings A World of Art to The International City<\/a><\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<p>In progress is a catalogue of the entirety of Long Beach\u2019s public art works, including murals and utility boxes. Garcia asked attendees to imagine being able to look up a mural or other public piece of art by artist or the year it was created through what may become a database accessible through an app. The mayor also mentioned an amphitheatre to be built next to the Queen Mary followed by the crowd\u2019s applause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know we\u2019re here tonight to celebrate all the great stuff about art and community, but I also hope that we take that love that we have for the arts and put it into energy into stopping the forces in Washington that are trying to roll back funding for the arts, protections for artists[&#8230;],\u201d Garcia said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-50788\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/DSC_0133.JPG\" alt=\"DSC 0133\" width=\"620\" height=\"415\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Arts Council Executive Director Griselda Suarez listed the many accomplishments of the organization over the past year, including the recently completed Cambodia Town Mural Project, being able to invest over $60,000 from generous funders of the arts and the selection of the Arts Council to participate as one of only 15 SoCal organizations in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cac.ca.gov\/programs\/via.php\">Veterans Initiative for the Arts<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cac.ca.gov\/programs\/via.php.\">.<\/a> Suarez encouraged attendees to participate in the <a href=\"https:\/\/downtownlongbeach.org\/dtlb-unfiltered\/\">Downtown Long Beach Unfiltered<\/a> photography contest\u00a0this month.<\/p>\n<p>Suarez also brought up her struggle over the past two years to overcome cancer, attributing her current good health to the healing power of the arts and thanking the arts community for their support during her struggle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of you met me at a very trying time when I started at the Arts Council, and I just want to say thank you for sticking with me, thank you for seeing me through the wonderful change and that I\u2019m now healthy and I want to say that I\u2019m proof that the arts heal, and that they bring
