{"id":117,"date":"2019-04-12T10:45:46","date_gmt":"2019-04-12T17:45:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/?p=999946098"},"modified":"2019-04-12T10:45:46","modified_gmt":"2019-04-12T17:45:46","slug":"world-through-my-lens-challenges-assumptions-of-what-its-like-to-be-homeless","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/art\/world-through-my-lens-challenges-assumptions-of-what-its-like-to-be-homeless","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;World Through My Lens&#8217; challenges assumptions of what it&#8217;s like to be homeless"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Organizers of a photography show are hoping to challenge viewers\u2019 preconceived notions of what it\u2019s like to be homeless.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The World Through My Lens,&#8221; a project developed by four Masters of Social Work students at Cal State Long Beach, Hayley Iwig, Ibeth Chavez, Jennifer Guardado and Laura Cruz, opens tonight at Cultural Alliance of Long Beach and features photos taken by a group of people experiencing homelessness who were given disposable cameras to document their day-to-day lives.<\/p>\n<p>The result: photos taken from a rarely seen perspective, of those living on the streets of Long Beach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project has been humbling for me,\u201d Iwig said. \u201cI am amazed by the way in which people experiencing homelessness welcomed us into their communities and shared their stories with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The students worked with a mental health services agency as well as a volunteer agency called Wrap the Kids, an organization founded and run by community members without homes who make blankets for children and others in need. The entrance to the gallery is in the alley (Salana Court) behind 737 Pine Ave. Look for Suite B and a door marked with the organization\u2019s logo.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The show will be up for one night only, but Luna said he\u2019s trying to extend the show or bring it to other venues.
