{"id":12287,"date":"2020-01-27T05:59:40","date_gmt":"2020-01-27T13:59:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/hi-lo\/?p=30000006602"},"modified":"2020-01-28T07:05:27","modified_gmt":"2020-01-28T15:05:27","slug":"today-you-should-learn-all-about-orchids-with-south-coast-orchid-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/today-you-should-learn-all-about-orchids-with-south-coast-orchid-society","title":{"rendered":"Today, you should&#8230; learn all about orchids with South Coast Orchid Society"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><b>MONDAY, JAN. 27<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>While you can buy an orchid at a Trader Joe\u2019s these days, this shouldn\u2019t take away from the fact that fans of the seductive, drooping plant have been meeting in Long Beach Parks Department facilities since 1950 when South Coast Orchid Society was founded and the challenge of growing your own orchids was much more expensive.<\/p>\n<p>Monday will mark the beginning of the nonprofit\u2019s 70th year bringing together orchid enthusiasts, interested in growing and learning more about the Orchidaceae family\u2019s\u2014possibly the largest in the plant kingdom\u2014blossomy botanics.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight, hear from Huntington Botanic Gardens Orchid Collection Specialist, Brandon Tam, who is not only \u201ca great speaker and a really cool guy,\u201d said the society\u2019s Vice President John McCoy, but will bring to Monday\u2019s meet-up an \u201copportunity to consider how SoCal orchid clubs and horticultural institutions such as the Huntington have transformed orchids from a very expensive hobby to something anyone can find at the local grocery or hardware store.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever visited The Huntington\u2019s Rose Hills Foundation Conservatory, where rare plants are rotated on a weekly basis for visitors to appreciate, you may have seen several of the 10,000 orchid plants that make up The Huntington\u2019s orchid collection, one of the largest in the U.S. Tam will assuredly arrive in Long Beach with plenty to tell of the diversity of the plant group and its history.<\/p>\n<p>South Coast Orchid Society\u2019s programming\u2014the group usually meets on the fourth Monday of the month\u2014is also quite diverse; presenters range from experts on particular types of orchids to admirers who have traveled to see orchids in their native habitats, said McCoy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis combination of topics helps us figure out how to grow more and better orchids, while at the same time alerting us to conservation issues around the world,\u201d said McCoy. \u201cBut at least there are plenty of photos to answer the question \u2018Do orchids grow in Long Beach?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[easy-image-collage id=30000006604]<\/p>\n<p><em>Photos courtesy South Coast Orchid Society.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>Another great thing: <\/b>While Tam will give his presentation at 7:30 p.m., don\u2019t be afraid to show up right on time at 7 p.m. when an informal ribbon judging takes place.
