Fourteen dogs, 13 cats and three rabbits went home from the Long Beach Animal Care Services (ACS) side of the P. D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village located at 7700 East Spring Street, and two cats and one dog were pulled by rescues. Three more dogs and a bunny went home the next day after meet-and-greets with pets already in the homes. A similar motley mix of mutts and moggies—73 in all—found homes on the spcaLA side.

For those of you who are still confused by the Pitchford configuration, the building is occupied by two separate entities—ACS, which is the city-owned shelter, and spcaLA, which is a private rescue that pulls animals that they believe are adoptable from the shelter side. However, there are plenty of great pets available at ACS who wouldn’t go home otherwise—sometimes in not so good a way—and the staff and volunteers are always overjoyed as well as gratified when they see anyone go home. I was volunteering on the cat side, natch, and my favorite, a 6-year-old orange-and-white former tom named Big Boy, now lives and butts heads with the lovely person who fell in love with him the way I did.

There are still dogs and cats in shelters and nearly tapped-out rescues who need out as well, and now you can take one home and commemorate him or her through donations on one of the three calendars highlighted in Countin’ the Days in Humane Ways, below, or you can feature your own pet. Or adopt a new one and feature them both. Or all. Rabbits are eligible, too. The possibilities would be endless if it weren’t for the four-pet limit in Long Beach.

Two of the featured calendars are run by two of those overworked rescues. This week and next, we’ll be featuring wannabe forever friends from each of them. We’ll do dogs this week as we did last week, because it’s been tersely brought to my attention that the Pets section has been cat heavy of late (as if there were something wrong with that). And besides, someone has to walk in the El Dorado Dog Park.
