{"id":1289,"date":"2017-08-03T23:57:22","date_gmt":"2017-08-03T23:57:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lbpost.com\/articles\/life\/food\/long-beach-culinary-duo-builds-community-through-multicultural-cuisine\/"},"modified":"2017-08-03T23:57:22","modified_gmt":"2017-08-03T23:57:22","slug":"long-beach-culinary-duo-builds-community-through-multicultural-cuisine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/food\/long-beach-culinary-duo-builds-community-through-multicultural-cuisine","title":{"rendered":"Long Beach Culinary Duo Builds Community Through Multicultural Cuisine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-55322\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1038.JPG\" alt=\"DSC 1038\" width=\"620\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Photos by Asia Morris.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On a cool midsummer Saturday evening in Long Beach\u2019s Rose Park neighborhood, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.companyofkhanh.com\/\">Company of Khanh<\/a> and Aliye Aydin of <a href=\"https:\/\/agoodcarrot.com\/\">A Good Carrot<\/a>\u00a0collaborated on a multi-course Turkish-inspired experience, feeding pop-up dinner guests with eastern mediterranean foods such as beef kofte and basmati rice pilaf tossed with grape leaves.<\/p>\n<p>Long Beach native Khanh Hoang has been running her small business, Company of Khanh, for almost two years, organizing pop-up dinners inspired by fare from around the world at private residences and public parks.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-49252\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/DSC_1022.JPG\" alt=\"DSC 1022\" width=\"620\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Aydin, who is also a Long Beach local, started her blog A Good Carrot about two years ago based on her 20 some years of experience in the food industry and her interest in making healthy cooking more available to eaters and readers. You might also recognize Aydin from her produce home delivery service, Beachgreens, which she ran for eight years.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first time Aydin and Hoang have ever collaborated, and according to how the evening went off without a hiccup or hurried maneuver, it won\u2019t be the last. With Aydin\u2019s industry experience and love for cooking nourishing food, and Hoang\u2019s passion for traveling and bringing multicultural sustenance to guests, the term \u201ctoo many chefs in the kitchen\u201d was the last thing to come to mind while observing the duo work throughout the evening.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-55323\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1025.JPG\" alt=\"DSC 1025\" width=\"620\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Puff puff with\u00a0peanut and betel leaf pesto and jackfruit for appetizers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The two met a mere couple of weeks before the Midsummer Dinner Party, with Aydin divulging that she\u2019d been following Company of Khanh since Hoang returned home from a trip to Turkey about a year ago and created a pop-up dinner called \u201cWTF?\u201d as in \u201cWhere\u2019s the Turkish Food?\u201d marking the start of the company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just saw the Turkish thing and said who is this girl? Because Turkish food isn\u2019t really that well represented,\u201d Aydin said, whose Turkish heritage shone through several of the dishes served that evening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd it\u2019s insane that it isn\u2019t because it\u2019s so good,\u201d Hoang followed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-55324\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1032.JPG\" alt=\"DSC 1032\" width=\"620\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><em>Charcoal grilled grass-fed beef kofta.<\/em><br \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The match made in culinary heaven collaborated to bring their 20 to 30 dinner guests fire roasted butterflied golden pompano with spicy tomato sauce to the table, charcoal grilled grass-fed beef kofta, with the two entrees book ended by peanut and betel leaf pesto drizzled over sweet and crunchy puff puffs, paired with jackfruit, a sweet corn salad served family style and for dessert, a scoop of olive oil ice cream served with grilled stone fruit. Before sitting down to eat, attendees sipped on rosemary rhubarb gin fizz cocktails.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past two years, Company of Khanh has grown from a little known culinary secret to a local treasure. And based on the opportunities now being presented to her, Hoang\u2019s passion for nourishing (and creating) community through serving a variety of eclectic cuisine, may become known on a more national level.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-55325\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/DSC_1046.JPG\" alt=\"DSC 1046\" width=\"620\" height=\"415\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Olive oil ice cream served with grilled stone fruit.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hoang is quitting her day job as a nurse within the next two weeks to run Company of Khanh full time. Next on the docket may be a pop-up she was asked to cater in New York come October. She says the universe is telling her to focus on this dream of helping people eat better food, without the overpriced exclusivity that, albeit well-intentioned, \u201cfarm-to-table\u201d culture oftentimes touts.
