{"id":1304,"date":"2017-07-25T22:48:22","date_gmt":"2017-07-25T22:48:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lbpost.com\/articles\/life\/arts-culture\/queer-art-pop-up-to-showcase-discuss-lgbtq-artistic-economy-and-culture\/"},"modified":"2017-07-25T22:48:22","modified_gmt":"2017-07-25T22:48:22","slug":"queer-art-pop-up-to-showcase-discuss-lgbtq-artistic-economy-and-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/art\/queer-art-pop-up-to-showcase-discuss-lgbtq-artistic-economy-and-culture","title":{"rendered":"Queer Art Pop-Up to Showcase, Discuss LGBTQ Artistic Economy and Culture"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-55209\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/harveyuqueerart.png\" alt=\"harveyuqueerart\" width=\"620\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Image courtesy of the i-team.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>All are invited to a queer art showcase and open discussion at Harvey Milk Park and Equality Plaza to participate in an event designed to foster the LGBTQ+ community\u2019s artistic and economic culture by presenting queer art and discussing innovations in the art economy, the city announced.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Long Beach Innovation Team (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.longbeach.gov\/iteam\">i-team<\/a>) \u00a0in collaboration with Work Evolution, Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez and the Arts Council for Long Beach will host the pop-up visual and performance art event this Thursday from 5:00PM to 7:30PM. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am looking forward to seeing the thought provoking and passionate art that has been created by these outstanding queer artists,\u201d Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez said in a statement. \u201cHarvey Milk envisioned a world where rights were won when voices were heard, and today we are hearing the voices of an important segment of the LGBTQ+ community.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Attendees can expect to see paintings, printed photography and performance pieces showcasing expressions of the queer experience, identity and perspective. The selected works were made by artists who visit, work and live in Long Beach, and were submitted during an open call for art that explores the meaning behind \u201cqueer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Performances from local musician Mooney Starr and regional performing artist Marissa Lynn will take place at 5:00PM.<\/p>\n<p>At 6:00PM, the Arts Council for Long Beach will host an Open Conversation session on the arts economy, featuring presentations from Karen Atkinson of GYST-Ink, an artist-run company providing resources, technology and solutions for artists, Sofia Chirico with <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/business\/curensea\/\">Curensea<\/a>, a digital art economy platform where works can be published, shared and supported and Myriam Gurba, local queer spoken-word artist, visual artist, and writer, followed by the open discussion. <\/p>\n<p>Attendees are invited to learn about professional development, discuss economic innovations and share their individual experiences as creatives and advocates for art.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many ideas and discussions about art that go on in our great city,\u201d Griselda Suarez, executive director of the Arts Council, said in a statement. \u201cOpen Conversations provide a unique space for artists and art advocates to come together and <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/life\/as-more-outside-developers-invest-in-long-beach-how-will-communities-maintain-their-identities\/\">engage in unexpected perspectives<\/a>, and learn new approaches or trends that make the arts community strong.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; float: left;\">\n<div style=\"width: 100px; height: 100px; background-image: url('images\/asia\/IMG_9405.JPG'); background-size: cover; background-position: center center; float: left; margin-right: 30px; display:none;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<p> <small style=\"font-weight: lighter;\">RELATED<\/small> <\/p>\n<h2 ><a onclick=\"ga('send', 'event', 'Related Link', 'click', 'Realted Link v1');\" href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/life\/as-more-outside-developers-invest-in-long-beach-how-will-communities-maintain-their-identities\/\">As More Outside Developers Invest in Long Beach, How Will Communities Maintain Their Identities?<\/a><\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<p>\u201cThe Harvey Milk Park Project \u2018Outdoor Collaborative\u2019 concept, is part of the city\u2019s broader economic development and i-team efforts to connect people and institutions through more open, diverse and inclusive public spaces for people to gather,\u201d stated the announcement. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/place\/upcoming-activations-at-harvey-milk-park-seek-to-further-connect-people-and-place\/\">The Outdoor Collaborative<\/a>, made possible with a grant from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knightfoundation.org\">John S. and James L. Knight Foundation<\/a>, is currently one year into the 18-month process focused on transforming Harvey Milk Park into an outdoor public space that encourages collaboration, entrepreneurship and connectivity, as well as celebrates the legacy of Harvey Milk and the LGBTQ+ community.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width:100%;
