Adopt a pit bull from our shelter!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Judging by last Saturday\u2019s meet-and-greet, Chloe-mania hasn&#8217;t subsided. Between 300 and 400 people showed up for Chloe selfies, cuddles, and big, wet kisses, and pets from several rescues went home or had applications made. A couple of them were adoptables featured in <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/life\/pets\/line-up-to-meet-chloe-and-the-other-dogs-lined-up-to-meet-you\/?fbclid=IwAR1da47Bhl2IjXAl2HpXEAPxD4fIo2qGOvDeEJhXR5c1oJliRPQZk039xxQ\">last week&#8217;s <strong>Virtually Pets<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Our girl&#8217;s leaving quite the living legacy. Pitchford Companion Animal Village, which houses our city shelter at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longbeach.gov\/acs\">Long Beach Animal Care Services<\/a> and the private shelter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spcala.com\/\">spcaLA<\/a>, you can pick out a pit bull or bully mix and pick your own adoption fee as well (see <strong>Ongoing<\/strong> below\u2014you have until April 14).<\/p>\n<p>Pit bulls get dumped in shelters all the time and have long been cited as the breed most likely to be at or near <a href=\"https:\/\/cuddly.com\/pet-article\/35-12\/12-most-common-dog-breeds-in-shelters\">the top of shelter populations<\/a>. They\u2019re also the most likely to be euthanized. A recent listing of adoptable dogs on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longbeach.gov\/acs\/pets\/adoptions\/dogs\/\">Animal Care Services\u2019 Adoption page<\/a> showed 51 on the roster; 25 were bully breeds or mixes\u2014a tail wag away from half.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is, I meet up with an increasing number of them on leashes all the time, and when I ask if I might meet the dog, I and whomever I\u2019m with get an enthusiastic yes from the human and a huge, goony smile from the dog.\u00a0 Sometimes, we rate a big, smeary kiss. A couple of Long Beach Post staff members have shelter pit alumni, and they&#8217;re just as goony over them. Remember Petey the Pup from &#8220;The Little Rascals&#8221;? Yup\u2014Petey was a pittie. If these guys aren\u2019t ambassadors for their breed, I don\u2019t know who is.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe and her rescuers inspired people through her survival and the determination of her rescuers as well as that of the community to see that she made it. Nothing like a video to inspire you to consider coming to the shelter and picking out a pittie. These fragile babies, especially those not yet eating on their own, are typically euthanized on intake at most public shelters. In an effort to change the fate of far too many kittens, two non-profit rescue organizations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/thelittlelionfoundation\/\">The Little Lion Foundation<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.helensanderscatpaws.com\/\">Helen Sanders CatPAWS<\/a>, have launched a joint effort to create and operate a kitten nursery. This nursery will give kittens too young to be adopted or those who need medical care a safe place to heal and grow. Newborn kittens are fragile and vulnerable. You can tell by those photos\u2014if you look closely, you\u2019ll see the beautiful cat that each of them will grow to be.
