FACETIME OVER QUARANTINIS<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B9r_99SloPo\/<\/p>\n<p>As Tito\u2019s has established, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/public-health\/2020\/03\/05\/no-you-cant-use-titos-vodka-to-make-homemade-hand-sanitizer\/\">several times<\/a>, you cannot make hand sanitizer out of their vodka because it doesn\u2019t have a high enough concentration of alcohol to properly rid your delicate phalanges of germs. Tito\u2019s Handmade Vodka is 40% alcohol, while for a sanitizer to be effective, it must contain at least 60% alcohol, which led us down a rabbit hole only an office of clever, experienced drinkers might fall into, one where, at the very bottom we began looking for 120-proof spirits (liquors that contain 60% alcohol). But instead of trying to make our own hand sanitizer, we decided to get an expert\u2019s take on how to make drinkable drinks with this knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon Richardson of the Long Beach Business Journal suggested making quarantinis: \u201cIt\u2019s just a martini, but you can\u2019t go outside,\u201d he said, a little glumly.<\/p>\n<p>And what are its benefits? \u201cYou\u2019ll throw up, but for all the right reasons,\u201d said Steve Lowery, editor of the Hi-lo.<\/p>\n<p>And who knows how to make a quarantini? Or a cocktail, under quarantine? Talmadge Lowe does. The co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/hiloliquor\/\">Hi-Lo Liquor<\/a> was happy to offer a couple suggestions for spirits <i>close to<\/i> 120-proof, and yes, all the below ingredients are available at their Long Beach location, which at the moment, is working on stocking their snack section with more household essentials as shoppers continue to clear grocery store shelves. (<em>Asia Morris<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>[easy-image-collage id=30000008424]<\/p>\n<p>The Stay Inside Manhattan<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2.5 oz Barrel New Year Bourbon 109.4 Proof<\/li>\n<li>.75 oz Carpano Antica sweet vermouth<\/li>\n<li>3 dashes Angostura bitters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Stir over ice until very, very cold.<\/li>\n<li>Strain into a Nick &amp; Nora glass.<\/li>\n<li>Garnish with a cherry.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The Long Beach Mule<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1.5 oz Long Beach Water Vodka 101 Proof<\/li>\n<li>.5 oz Liber and Co Passionfruit Syrup<\/li>\n<li>.5 oz Lime Juice<\/li>\n<li>4 oz Bundaberg Ginger beer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Combine all ingredients in a tall glass or a copper mug with ice and stir gently.<\/li>\n<li>Garnish with a lime wedge.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Another great thing: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2020\/03\/17\/video-happy-hour-coronavirus-st-patricks-day\/\">The Washington Post<\/a> recently discovered that one of our own, as in a fellow Long Beach resident, has filled up her calendar with Facetime chat appointments specifically over drinks since she was asked to work from home. So why not make a cocktail and share it, over the phone?<\/p>\n<p><b>Giving us a moment\u2019s pause: <\/b>Instead of Aviation gin, as the picture above suggests, we highly recommend supporting local distiller Portuguese Bend and their Donna Rosa or Smoke Bay gins. But UNITS wants to teach you how to save space, <em>and<\/em> money in storage. Did you know professional organizers say the average American household has 300,000 things? Thanks, UNITS.<\/p>\n<h3>4. FINISH THE BOOK<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10000000571\" src=\"https:\/\/img.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/10113221\/0703-Tim-232-.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1028\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I was going to recommend Susan Orlean\u2019s \u201cThe Library Book\u201d of which I hear great things or Ben Lerner\u2019s \u201cThe Topeka School\u201d of which I\u2019ve read great things or \u201cThe Old Drift\u201d by Zambian author Namwali Serpell which may be the best of the bunch. But then I thought, I bet you\u2019re as lame as me. That you have shelves and\/or piles of books you started and haven\u2019t finished. That to suggest you go get more books, destined to end up on shelves and piles, just wasn\u2019t right.<\/p>\n<p>So, instead, read all those books that you started and stopped for reasons that usually were that you didn\u2019t have the time. Guess what? You do now. So, put your nose in \u201cThe Great Gatsby\u201d that you never finished from AP Lit\u2014thanks, Cliff Notes\u2014hoist and plow through Shelby Foote\u2019s \u201cCivil War: A Narrative,\u201d the three volumes that were a pillar of Ken Burns&#8217; monumental Civil War documentary. The same three volumes that you told everyone you read and loved but when they pressed you for details, you&#8217;d just slowly shake your head, look off in the distance and mutter \u201cdevastating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, yes, you can finally sit down and attack David Foster Wallace\u2019s, 1,000-page literary seesaw, \u201cInfinite Jest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The point is, you have plenty of books already in your home, plenty that you thought enough of to not only purchase but to decorate your home with. Get to them, you\u2019ll feel much better and, theoretically, you\u2019ll be smarter, wiser, jestier. (<em>Steve Lowery<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Another great thing:<\/strong> Me? I&#8217;ll be jumping back into \u201cJust Kids,\u201d the National Book Award-winning autobiography of Patti Smith, detailing not only the poet\/punk\/icon\u2019s early life but her relationship with artist Robert Mapplethorpe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Giving us a moment&#8217;s pause:<\/strong> After that, &#8220;Falconer&#8221; by John Cheever and then &#8220;Pistol&#8221; by Mark Kriegel and then &#8220;The Crying of Lot 49&#8221; by Thomas Pynchon and then &#8220;The Metaphysical Club&#8221; by Louis Menand and then &#8220;Independence Day&#8221; by Richard Ford. It really is great. In fact, Kanopy is what we thought Netflix was going to be when we signed up. In fact, a friend of mine calls Kanopy &#8220;Netflix for classy people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For instance, right now, Kanopy is offering groupings of films that include immigration in the 21st century, South Korean filmmakers, the female gaze and the great courses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Another great thing:<\/strong> Everything from &#8220;Old Boy&#8221; to &#8220;Passion Fish&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Giving us a moment\u2019s pause:<\/strong> If you&#8217;ve seen neither of those, you should get Kanopy immediately.<\/p>\n<h3><b>6. (<em>Asia Morris<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><b>Giving us a moment\u2019s pause: <\/b>It\u2019s a bit frustrating, clicking, instead of walking your way up <a href=\"https:\/\/artsandculture.google.com\/story\/10-top-museums-you-can-explore-right-here-right-now\/igKSKBBnEBSGKg\">The Guggenheim Museum\u2019s spiraling ramp of never-ending art<\/a>, but we figure, with a little patience and since we all have a more time on our hands, why not?<\/p>\n<h3>7. BECOME INSUFFERABLE<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"LES GRANDS MYTHES_THE GREAT GREEK MYTHS\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/156285667?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>No matter the challenge or crisis, one thing that will always remain true about human beings is our unquenchable desire to appear smarter than other human beings. But how does one accomplish this? As item No. 4 proves, certainly not by reading.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, there are numerous, straight ahead, documentary\/educational shows on all the streaming services that will fill your head with the kind of useless knowledge so useful to drop in mid-conversation that will have others saying, &#8220;Does that guy ever shut up?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One of my current favorite make-me-smarter shows is the French-produced &#8220;Great Greek Myths.&#8221; Yes, it&#8217;s not the most creative of titles, but it will walk you through one of the source materials of most of Western literature and does it in a cohesive, compelling manner, utilizing animation and numerous classic works of art that makes for, and I&#8217;m not making this up, very entertaining viewing. No. Really. (<em>Steve Lowery<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Another great thing:<\/strong> Another favorite is &#8220;Great Artists with Tim Marlow.&#8221; Again, it appears no one was spending a lot of time on the title with this one, but these 23-minute shows, delve deep into the lives of the world&#8217;s most iconic artists\u2014Leonardo. Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Vermeer, etc\u2014and does it without getting breathy. Marlow has questionable taste in sports coats but is exceptional in not only breaking down brushstrokes but showing you the real person behind the painter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Giving us a moment&#8217;s pause:<\/strong> Been thinking a lot lately about Caravaggio&#8217;s mysterious death. What? You weren&#8217;t aware that Caravaggio&#8217;s death remains shrouded in mystery? As you know, the Italian whose style heavily influenced the development of the Baroque style of painting, killed a man in a sword fight. What? You didn&#8217;t know that.
