Exhausted, having just arrived and being introduced to the people I would be helping implement better HIV\/AIDS programs in East Africa, I was irritated.<\/p>\n<p>My luggage had been lost, I was diverted into Kuwait for 14\u00a0hours, held in Dubai for another 18 hours, and the moment I stepped into my bedroom, I was being whisked away into the brush by a buncha volunteers in a taxi driven by a guy\u00a0who insisted he be called &#8220;Biggie&#8221; (and eventually became the house&#8217;s go-to drug dealer and a good friend).<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#8217;t have asked for a better reliever than that of Ethiopian food. Communal, rich, and eschewing utensils, eating Ethiopian food becomes an experience\u2013and rightfully so. You&#8217;ll often hear, especially if it is your first time, of\u00a0<i>gursha,\u00a0<\/i>an act of friendship or love expressed by feeding others around you with your own hands using\u00a0<em>injera,\u00a0<\/em>a sourdough flat bread that is the base of eating&#8217;n&#8217;scooping all forms of Ethiopian dishes.<\/p>\n<p>So when asked why Ethiopian food is particularly special to me, it&#8217;s because it was a foreign cuisine that made me find a center in a foreign world that I was experiencing through very tired and confused eyes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6627\" src=\"http:\/\/www.longbeachize.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-25-at-9.21.46-AM-1024x638.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"386\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>One of Hoang&#8217;s previous popup dinners.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Distinct and unique, Ethiopian food outside of LA&#8217;s famed Little Ethiopia\u2014a stretch of Fairfax in Midtown\u2014has been difficult if not outright impossible to find, especially here in Long Beach. (Minus the amazing home delivery food of Meseret &#8220;Mesi&#8221; Mekuria, which I still deeply miss.)<\/p>\n<p>Well, until\u00a0Khanh Hoang, owner of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.companyofkhanh.com\/\">Company of Khanh<\/a>, has decided to do an Essence of Ethiopia Popup Picnic on a private lawn along the bluff\u00a0on June 10 at 6PM.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Recently, I have been energized by different aspects of my community,&#8221; Hoang said. &#8220;I strive to be part of promoting diversity by doing what I know best; bringing people together with food. Despite working full-time as a nurse, I made a goal to host one popup\u00a0a season to feel out the needs of my community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We couldn&#8217;t be more ecstatic. The menu is an array of classic&#8217;n&#8217;common items of Ethiopian cuisine:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"text-align-center\"><strong>Yeqey Sir Qiqqil:\u00a0<\/strong><em>Marinated and delicately spiced beets tossed in a simple tangy dressing<\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"text-align-center\"><strong>Gomen:\u00a0<\/strong><em>Collard greens fragrantly cooked in onions and jalapenos with hints of ginger and allspice<\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"text-align-center\"><strong>Yatakilt Alicha:\u00a0<\/strong><em>Cabbage, carrots and potatoes saut\u00e9ed with infused niter qibe (aromatic ghee)<\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"text-align-center\"><strong>Shiro Wat:\u00a0<\/strong><em>Flavorful curried stew cooked with spiced chickpea seasoning<\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"text-align-center\"><strong>Yater Kik Alicha:\u00a0<\/strong><em>Creamy yellow split peas simmered with onions and savory spice<\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"text-align-center\"><strong>Salata:\u00a0<\/strong><em>Raw, crispy vegetables gently tossed with lime vinaigrette<\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"text-align-center\"><strong>Misir Wat<em>:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><em>Spicy red lentils curried with berbere spice<\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"text-align-center\"><strong>Duro Wat Chicken:\u00a0<\/strong><em>Tender pieces of chicken braised in robust berbere spice, garlic, and ginger jus<\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"text-align-center\"><em>with sliced hard boiled eggs<\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"text-align-center\"><strong>Ye\u2019Assa Tibs:\u00a0<\/strong><em>Market fresh fish checkered cut and fried in grapeseed oil<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tickets are $45 per person.
