Bottom row (left to right): Robert Molina, Robert Luna, Robert Uranga, Xavier Espino, Lionel Gonzalez.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Long Beach-based photographer Duke Givens is back spreading his message of positivity and unity through a soon-to-be released calendar featuring the diverse men and women who make up the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been shooting images as you know for a very long time, but conceptually I\u2019ve been working on this series of representing all walks of life in Long Beach from a very classy perspective,\u201d Givens said. \u201cI had a concept to shoot all of the different races of men and women in the city for many years and it&#8217;s now starting to materialize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first photos released from the calendar showcases Long Beach\u2019s Latino leadership, with the likes of Seventh District Councilmember Roberto Uranga, Lola\u2019s and The Social List owner Luis Navarro and Long Beach Police Chief Robert Luna, posed in front of the Museum of Latin American Art.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-54147\" style=\"vertical-align: middle;\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/selfie_w_latinos.jpg\" alt=\"selfie w latinos\" width=\"620\" height=\"423\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Long Beach photographer Duke Givens (bottom, left) takes a selfie with local Latino leadership.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo these men represent the core values of strength, honor, integrity, trust and wisdom,\u201d Givens said. \u201cPutting that image together with the backdrop of MOLAA&#8230; it\u2019s like these are living art pieces that serve the city\u2026 So they\u2019re actually works of art in our city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Givens referred to Uranga and Luna as his big brothers and mentors.<\/p>\n<p>About a year ago, Givens&#8217; creative partner Antonio Gilbreath photographed Vice Mayor Rex Richardson, Eighth District Councilmember Al Austin and District 64 Assemblymember Mike Gipson, who represents much of Carson, Compton and Wilmington, under the bridge by the Queen Mary.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; float: left;\">\n<div style=\"width: 100px; height: 100px; background-image: url('images\/keeley\/Like_Keys_in_the_PianoCropped.jpg'); background-size: cover; background-position: center center; float: left; margin-right: 30px; display:none;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<p> <small style=\"font-weight: lighter;\">RELATED<\/small> <\/p>\n<h2 ><a onclick=\"ga('send', 'event', 'Related Link', 'click', 'Realted Link v1');\" href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/news\/like-keys-of-a-piano-long-beach-artist-uses-local-leaders-to-create-image-of-unity\/\">Like Keys of a Piano: Long Beach Artist Photographs Local Leaders, Creating Image of Unity<\/a><\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<p>Currently, Givens is looking to include Long Beach City Prosecutor Doug Haubert and City Manager Patrick West and members of the Asian and Jewish community.<\/p>\n<p>While the list of featured women leaders has yet to be finalized, Givens said \u201cwe\u2019ve got some heavy hitters coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the last page of the calendar, Givens envisions a group shot of children holding hands to highlight Long Beach as an international city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work that I do is always based on my mission statement \u2018accentuating the positive,\u2019 because there\u2019s always so much negative,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re inundated with so much negativity and we\u2019re at a stage where it\u2019s always about race in certain regards so with me I always try to focus and highlight and shine on those of all races.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; float: left;\">\n<div style=\"width: 100px; height: 100px; background-image: url('images\/stephanie\/free_ties.jpg'); background-size: cover; background-position: center center; float: left; margin-right: 30px; display:none;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<p> <small style=\"font-weight: lighter;\">RELATED<\/small> <\/p>\n<h2 ><a onclick=\"ga('send', 'event', 'Related Link', 'click', 'Realted Link v1');\" href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/life\/arts-culture\/upcoming-fashion-show-aims-to-teach-young-boys-how-to-dress-for-success\/\">Upcoming Fashion Show Aims to Teach Young Boys How to Dress for Success<\/a><\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<p>While the calendar doesn\u2019t have a release date yet, Givens hopes to have it ready for the 2018 year.
