Local farmers and gardeners gathered at the 4th Annual Long Beach County Fair earlier this month to show off their best produce and compete in the Blue Prize Urban Agriculture Competition.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Blue Ribbon Urban Agriculture Competition brings out the best of our budding urban agriculture community,\u201d Co-Director Tony Damico said in a statement. \u201cIn just our second year, we had nearly 50 entries across 5 categories!\u201d<\/p>\n

Long Beach urban agriculturalists were asked to bring in and place their produce into categories such as \u201cRoot Vegetables\u201d and \u201cHerbs and Flowers\u201d to be judged by a talented range of local food experts. This year\u2019s judges included Aliye Aydin of AGoodCarrot.com, Quinn Jacobs, a Long Beach resident and Pastry Chef at Napa Valley Grille, Lori Shaw of Lady Farmer LA and Luis Tobon of North LB Crop Swappers.<\/p>\n

\u201cBixby Knolls First Fridays brings together thousands of residents, so it\u2019s a ripe opportunity to showcase Long Beach\u2019s growing food movement and invite the community to join in,\u201d Ryan Smolar, co-director of Long Beach Fresh, said in a statement.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s winners for the best produce grown in Long Beach are:<\/p>\n

Root Vegetables:
1st \u2013 The Growing Experience \u2013 Striped Beets
2nd \u2013 Sherwood Souzankari \u2013 Giant Kohlrabi
3rd \u2013 Marcella Santia \u2013 Beets<\/p>\n

Fruits:
1st \u2013 Ofelia Rivera \u2013 Bananas
2nd \u2013 Jose Gonzales \u2013 Kumquats
3rd \u2013 Emily Quest Rhoads \u2013 Strawberries<\/p>\n

Leafy Greens:
1st \u2013 Kathleen Blakistone of Moonwater Farm \u2013 Purple Mustard Greens
2nd \u2013 Jim Coke \u2013 Tree Collards
3rd \u2013 The Growing Experience \u2013 Rainbow Swiss Chard<\/p>\n

If you missed this contest, the next Long Beach County Fair and Blue Ribbon Urban Agriculture Competition is slated for Friday, April 6, 2018, according to the release.<\/p>\n
