{"id":1467,"date":"2017-04-14T18:28:58","date_gmt":"2017-04-14T18:28:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lbpost.com\/articles\/life\/arts-culture\/molaa-receives-thea-award-for-outstanding-achievement-for-transformations-exhibition\/"},"modified":"2017-04-14T18:28:58","modified_gmt":"2017-04-14T18:28:58","slug":"molaa-receives-thea-award-for-outstanding-achievement-for-transformations-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/art\/molaa-receives-thea-award-for-outstanding-achievement-for-transformations-exhibition","title":{"rendered":"MOLAA Receives THEA Award for Outstanding Achievement for Transformations Exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-53816\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transformations.jpg\" alt=\"transformations\" width=\"620\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Images courtesy of the Museum of Latin American Art.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) announced this week that their exhibition, <em>Transformations<\/em>, has received a 2016 Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement for \u201cA Museum Exhibit on a Limited Budget\u201d from the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA)<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>TEA, an international non-profit association representing the world\u2019s leading creators, developers, designers and producers of compelling places and experiences, introduced the THEA award in 1994. Recognized as the equivalent of an Academy Award in the themed entertainment industry, more than a hundred achievements from around the world are entered every year to compete for 12 to 18 awards.<\/p>\n<p>The museum will be presented with the award on April 22 at the 23rd Annual Thea Awards Gala to be held at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim.<\/p>\n<p>Curated by MOLAA Curator of Collections, Carlos Ortega, <em>Transformations<\/em> was displayed in MOLAA\u2019s galleries in 2015 and told the stories of five Long Beach residents through video. Their transformative experiences included battling cancer, surviving incarceration and gang violence.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-53815\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/transformations3.jpg\" alt=\"transformations3\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>From left: Carlos Ortega, MOLAA curator of collections, Juan Gonzalez, participant, Willie Qui\u00f1ones, participant, Felicia Revero, participant, Rocio Villalobos, participant, Mick Victor, photographer, Lorena Mercado, participant and Kendell Carter, artist.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn most art exhibits, the curator receives much of the glory,\u201d Ortega said in a statement. \u201cIn the case of Transformations, the glory was, rather, the huge emotional connection between the public and the participants\u2019 stories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each storyteller selected works of art from MOLAA\u2019s collection, to display on the walls as a representation of their emotional state before and after their transformative experience.
