This is evident in Long Beach—our city has a large volunteer base that embraces causes that benefit humans and animals, the latter of which is what concerns us in this column.

This call for volunteers is for anyone who loves cats, is interested in having each one live a long and happy life, and has the desire and anywhere from an ounce to a ton of time to help. Stray Cat Alliance (SCA) is in desperate need of assistance with its adoption program in Long Beach. They run two adoption centers at two PetSmarts (Signal Hill/Long Beach and Garden Grove) and also handle an extremely busy return-to-field program. They need the following volunteer efforts:

A person in charge of each adoption center who runs adoptions on Saturdays, takes photos of cats for the adoption websites, and schedules daily volunteers. Time commitment: about eight hours a week.

Daily volunteers at the adoption centers to clean, feed and socialize the cats. Time commitment: one hour-and-a-half shift a week.

A person to register microchips. Time commitment: one hour a week.

A person to upload photos and bios to the adoption websites and remove them once the cat is adopted. Time commitment: three to four hours a week or as needed.

Most importantly, a follow-up liaison to call people who have adopted one of the cats to make sure that all is going well with the kitty and work directly with the SCA area leader if problems have arisen. The objective is to work with the family in order to keep the cat in the home.

These volunteer positions are vital to the continuance of the SCA’s adoption program, which directly saves the lives of Long Beach shelter cats. If you can help or at least share this information, the organization would be forever grateful. This is an urgent situation, and the cats are depending on us.

Please email Anna@straycatalliance.org if you can help.

The main objective to SCA’s efforts and those of any good shelter or rescue is providing a good home for one of these characters. You can adopt one whether you have time to volunteer or don’t.

This is Desi.
