{"id":15356,"date":"2020-04-27T17:00:15","date_gmt":"2020-04-28T00:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/hi-lo\/?p=30000010085"},"modified":"2020-04-27T17:01:17","modified_gmt":"2020-04-28T00:01:17","slug":"walk-long-beach-takes-you-on-safe-scenic-strolls-in-your-neighborhood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/walk-long-beach-takes-you-on-safe-scenic-strolls-in-your-neighborhood","title":{"rendered":"Walk Long Beach takes you on safe, scenic strolls in your neighborhood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Taking a walk is an underrated activity for resetting your body and mind with the sights, sounds and smells of the outdoors that, for some, is now being met with an understandable hesitance under stay-at-home orders.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, Walk Long Beach, a local nonprofit aiming to simplify walking safely as well as promote its myriad health benefits, instituted its \u201cWalking Wednesdays,\u201d an e-blast offering a suggestion of where to walk that day or any day, for that matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafer at home does not mean you can\u2019t get out and walk,\u201d WLB states. \u201cGetting out of the house and away from the news for a bit will make you feel better, honest!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The weekly email includes a route-for-the-day and pulls from WLB\u2019s pile of more than 35 walking loop cards, created in collaboration with urban design studio, City Fabrick. Each card contains an easy-to-follow map and description of the featured route. There are so many routes to choose from, it&#8217;s likely you&#8217;ll find one in your neck of the woods.<\/p>\n<p>Walks vary in distance and neighborhood, including a 3.5-mile walk through Wrigley\u2019s historic landmark district, a route full of elderly, twisting trees and vintage homes to admire.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10000018784\" src=\"https:\/\/img.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/27145343\/A2996FD0-CC3F-4859-A573-5C0100B28C80.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"1090\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can find the cards at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walklongbeach.org\">walklongbeach.org<\/a>, on Instagram <a href=\"http:\/\/www.instagram.com\/walklongbeach\">@walklongbeach<\/a>, and can request that a handful be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B-Pg7FUJXVz\/?igshid=y8if71yug7ph\">mailed straight to your door<\/a>, or left at a safe and convenient location to pick up. Just email WLB Executive Director Steve Gerhardt (steve@walklongbeach.org), a man who has long advocated for making the city a more walkable place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalking is good for you, from improving circulation to managing diabetes to elevating mood,\u201d Gerhardt said.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s showing up to Planning Commission meetings to present concerns on pedestrian-friendly design, or drawing the public\u2019s attention to walking routes, WLB continues to adapt as a resource under COVID-19 conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Included in the promotion of the routes are bullet points on how to walk safely during the pandemic and any time.<\/p>\n<p>Before heading out, make sure to read the tips below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-removefontsize=\"true\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"12\">When outside, wear a mask or face covering of some sort to protect yourself and others.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-removefontsize=\"true\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"12\">Practice good physical distancing, at least six feet.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-removefontsize=\"true\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"12\">Stay away from crowded locations whether they are designated for walking or not.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-removefontsize=\"true\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"12\">If you stop to chat, stay back six feet from others.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-removefontsize=\"true\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"12\">If you are somewhere where others are walking, walk a little faster or slower or step aside to maintain safe separation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-removefontsize=\"true\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"12\">Walk only in small groups with people and pets you live with, or go out on your own.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-removefontsize=\"true\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"12\">Don&#8217;t push traffic signal buttons with your fingers, wear a glove or use an elbow. We heard <a href=\"https:\/\/walklongbeach.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=a9df4a4e839543c40d54b5eb1&amp;id=d80a7677bc&amp;e=0676d64838\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/walklongbeach.us18.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Da9df4a4e839543c40d54b5eb1%26id%3Dd80a7677bc%26e%3D0676d64838&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1587652538229000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFzxgkxKKh1co7dmLwbHFUL_gTRlQ\" data-removefontsize=\"true\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"12\">one science reporter from the New York Times recommend<\/a>\u00a0wearing one glove, and leaving the other hand in your pocket, and available to work your phone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-removefontsize=\"true\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"12\">Wash your hands very well when you get home.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-removefontsize=\"true\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"12\">Leave your walking shoes by the door.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-removefontsize=\"true\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"12\">Avoid touching your face when you are out.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-removefontsize=\"true\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"12\">Be extra aware of your surroundings.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-removefontsize=\"true\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"12\">Be aware that there is less traffic and drivers are taking advantage and speeding.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-removefontsize=\"true\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"12\">If you are driving, please be more careful, and look out for the increased number of pedestrians and cyclists.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And, as WLB continues to track pedestrian safety issues, you<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;
