{"id":1552,"date":"2017-02-23T01:31:23","date_gmt":"2017-02-23T01:31:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lbpost.com\/articles\/life\/arts-culture\/a-new-art-coalition-s-inaugural-exhibition-is-a-psychotropic-nod-to-standing-rock\/"},"modified":"2017-02-23T01:31:23","modified_gmt":"2017-02-23T01:31:23","slug":"a-new-art-coalition-s-inaugural-exhibition-is-a-psychotropic-nod-to-standing-rock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/art\/a-new-art-coalition-s-inaugural-exhibition-is-a-psychotropic-nod-to-standing-rock","title":{"rendered":"A New Art Coalition\u2019s Inaugural Exhibition is A Psychotropic Nod to Standing Rock"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-53056\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/DSC_0146.JPG\" alt=\"DSC 0146\" width=\"620\" height=\"415\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Photos by Asia Morris.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve traveled through the East Village Arts District recently, you may have stumbled upon an animated storefront, where pale pink lights and dazzling graphics accompany two strange-looking shapes showcased behind the windows.<\/p>\n<p>What passersby have paused their evening walk or slowed their vehicle to gaze at, is the inaugural exhibition of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cacttuslb\/\">Creative Arts Coalition to Transform Urban Space<\/a> (C.A.C.t.T.U.S), <em>A Vision of Standing Rock Under San Pedro<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>C.A.C.t.T.U.S, a new space for local artists and the public \u201cto learn, and mature one\u2019s understanding of art,\u201d was opened this month by local artist Jorge Mujica, who plans to offer lectures, discussions, installations, workshops and exhibitions.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-53057\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/DSC_0153.JPG\" alt=\"DSC 0153\" width=\"620\" height=\"415\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Mujica&#8217;s free-standing painting of a San Pedro cactus.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think [C.A.C.t.T.U.S is] really concise at what it aims to do,\u201d said Mujica. \u201cAnd that is invite local and national and international artists and collaboratives to come in here and flex their creative muscles to create things that would interact with the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A very active member of the East Village Arts District, Mujica once held his studio practice at Art Exchange (ARTX), was one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/life\/arts-culture\/the-studio-artists-at-made-in-long-beach\/\">artists who moved their studio to MADE in Long Beach<\/a> (now called MADE by Millworks) when ARTX\u2019s studio spaces were being renovated and even combined underground comedy and art at MADE through an event series, <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/life\/arts-culture\/local-artist-and-comedian-join-together-to-bring-new-underground-comedy-to-long-beach\/\">Let the Good Times Roll<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; float: left;\">\n<div style=\"width: 100px; height: 100px; background-image: url('images\/asia\/july23.jpg'); background-size: cover; background-position: center center; float: left; margin-right: 30px; display:none;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<p> <small style=\"font-weight: lighter;\">RELATED<\/small> <\/p>\n<h2 ><a onclick=\"ga('send', 'event', 'Related Link', 'click', 'Realted Link v1');\" href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/life\/arts-culture\/local-artist-and-comedian-join-together-to-bring-new-underground-comedy-to-long-beach\/\">Local Artist and Comedian Join Together to Bring New Underground Comedy to Long Beach<\/a><\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<p>\u201cWhen I saw that this space was available I thought it was a really appropriate shift from MADE to something where I wouldn\u2019t have to ask for permission anymore,\u201d said Mujica. \u201cNow that I don\u2019t have to look for a venue to curate, I wanted to [have] a venue [where] I could have a curatorial vision and allow it to grow and prosper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>C.A.C.t.T.U.S is located on Elm Avenue, almost catty-corner from ARTX, next to the Institute 4 Labor Generosity Workers &amp; Uniforms, the Long Beach Depot for Creative ReUse and Dark Art Emporium on the other side of 3rd Street.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-31529\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/DSC_0147.JPG\" alt=\"DSC 0147\" width=\"620\" height=\"415\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A Vision of Standing Rock Under San Pedro is a collaboration between Mujica and artist <a href=\"http:\/\/rallsbrown.com\/#\/projects\/menu\">Rob Brown<\/a>. The two met at Basement Projects, a contemporary art and project venue in Santa Ana. What followed was a mutual admiration for each other\u2019s work and a plan to work together on a project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe storefront windows tell a narrative in an abstract and poetic way that references the Standing Rock monument, which was created by the rotary club of North Dakota and commissioned to help promote the Sioux influence in that region,\u201d Mujica said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd so we created this replica of the Standing Rock monument and then paired it with the San Pedro cacti, which is something that Native Americans[&#8230;] would consume in order to get psychoactive effects that were similar to mescaline. They were rituals that people looked upon in a very holistic and existential way[&#8230;],\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-53058\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/DSC_0152.JPG\" alt=\"DSC 0152\" width=\"620\" height=\"415\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Brown&#8217;s reference to the Standing Rock monument.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The exhibit is meant to fully immerse you, and even has a phone number viewers can call to hear an audio component. While the full installation is activated nightly from 6:00PM to 9:00PM, the phone line, (562) 294-6555, is accessible 24 hours a day. It creates a more personal and intimate connection to the piece, said Brown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is value in the act of slowing down and spending time with something in a society that is increasingly surrounded and bombarded with stimuli designed to be digested in split seconds,\u201d said Brown in a statement. \u201c[The installation\u2019s] aim is to create an opportunity for the viewer to enter a more active viewing and listening space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-53059\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/DSC_0154.JPG\" alt=\"DSC 0154\" width=\"620\" height=\"404\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Artist Jorge Mujica (left) with artist Rob Brown.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One creative way Mujica is supporting the space and its programming is through a monthly subscription, where patrons can pay $100 per month to receive a Creative Art Box, which includes a commissioned print and several other Long Beach esque goodies. Proceeds will go toward creating a scholarship for future attendees of the art classes within the space. href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/heavygel\/\">Heavy Gel Print Studio<\/a>\u00a0is by local artist Kenny McBride, who will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/252721988513926\/\">live painting and signing prints at C.A.C.t.T.U.S. on Thursday<\/a>, alongside goodies such as a sculptural pillow by Los Angeles-based artist J<a href=\"http:\/\/jayescaitlin.com\/\">ayes Caitlin<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.instagram.com\/stayanchoredlbc\">Stay Anchored<\/a> tshirt, a micro-batch of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/romeochocolates\/\">Romeo Chocolates<\/a> and a quarter pound
