{"id":1624,"date":"2017-01-05T00:04:24","date_gmt":"2017-01-05T00:04:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lbpost.com\/articles\/life\/music\/local-band-king-kang-packs-4th-street-vine-during-first-night-of-january-residency\/"},"modified":"2017-01-05T00:04:24","modified_gmt":"2017-01-05T00:04:24","slug":"local-band-king-kang-packs-4th-street-vine-during-first-night-of-january-residency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/music\/local-band-king-kang-packs-4th-street-vine-during-first-night-of-january-residency","title":{"rendered":"Local Band King Kang Packs 4th Street Vine During First Night of January Residency"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-52321\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/kkphoto.jpg\" alt=\"kkphoto\" width=\"640\" height=\"650\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Image by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/yourintimatenoise\/\">Jess Giles<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Long Beach-based band <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/kingkangmusic\/?fref=ts\">King Kang<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0first night of their January residency had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/4thstreetvine\/?fref=ts\">4th Street Vine<\/a> seemingly at capacity with the movements and head bobs of fellow musicians and loyal fans.<\/p>\n<p>For the last four months of 2016, King Kang, composed of guitarist Gino Martez, bassist Matthew Proffitt and drummer Ryan Serrano, ceased regularly performing to write new material, finish producing their first ever EP and set their intentions for the new year, the band\u2019s frontwoman Esther Kang told the Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019d talked about the residency for a while, but [we] had to postpone it to January to do it right,\u201d she said. \u201cWe wanted to integrate a different sound theme every week while featuring bands and artists that are beyond our normal sphere, ultimately to challenge ourselves to present something new and different every week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-52322\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/15871276_10154273273922643_2145598908_n.jpg\" alt=\"15871276 10154273273922643 2145598908 n\" width=\"640\" height=\"905\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re definitely ready to hit the ground running this year,\u201d Kang said.<\/p>\n<p>King Kang\u2019s first invite was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elharukuroi.com\/\">El-Haru Kuroi<\/a>, an East Los Angeles-based poly-rhythmic, Latin and Afro-rooted trio.<\/p>\n<p>Co-organized with Kang\u2019s partner, Abbey Barnett, next Monday\u2019s performance will feature Barnett\u2019s new hip-hop\/electronic project dubbed DreaMOD, and <a href=\"https:\/\/elos.bandcamp.com\/\">ELOS<\/a>, a hip-hop beatmaker self-described as \u201ca child of Low End Theory\u201d and one of Los Angeles-based Alpha Pup Records\u2019 latest signs.<\/p>\n<p>During King Kang\u2019s set that night, a few of their favorite local rappers, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/lookitstmons\/\">T\u2019MON<\/a>, Rahspect and Abbstract will be invited to perform over their songs.<\/p>\n<p>The third Monday, January 16, will feature <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sparepartsforbrokenhearts\/?fref=ts\">Spare Parts for Broken Hearts<\/a>, a Long Beach post-punk grunge trio that released their latest single, <em>Pleasure Delay<\/em>, in October, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/djjudithchrist\/\">DJ Judith Christ<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-52323\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/spareparts.jpg\" alt=\"spareparts\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Image courtesy of Spare Parts for Broken Hearts.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWeek four will be old timey and stripped down,\u201d Kang said. \u201cWe have local classic and contemporary jazz\/blues outfit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/missingshades\/\">Missing Shades of Blue<\/a>\u00a0 opening for us, and our set will feature a brass ensemble, comprised of our friends in the LBC, interpreting our songs with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Monday January 30, opening for the grand finale of the band\u2019s residency will be King Kang guitarist Gino Martez&#8217;s new psychedelic project, NUMEN, and experimental group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SeekTheFreek\/\">Seek the Freek<\/a>. King Kang\u2019s set will feature a choir and liquid projections on the walls, Kang said.<\/p>\n<p>The residency at 4th Street Vine will precede King Kang\u2019s debut studio release <em>Summer of Fire<\/em>, a seven-track EP the band has been working on for the past year and a half. Mastered by Brian Frederick of Hybrid Studios and mixed and co-produced by Kris Jackson of Fork n\u2019 Spoon Studios, look for it in February on CD, cassette and digital platforms.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-52324\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/summerfire.jpg\" alt=\"summerfire\" width=\"640\" height=\"356\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re so freakin excited to be able to share it with everyone, finally,\u201d Kang said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This May will also mark the band\u2019s second year together. As they continue writing, performing and experimenting, the group plans to hit the road for a tour of the Pacific Northwest this summer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve grown a lot together and have nothing but gratitude for our friends and community who continue to support us,\u201d Kang said. .<\/p>\n<p>All Monday night performances are from 8:00PM to 10:00PM, with the exception of January 9 and January 30, which start at 7:30PM.
