{"id":1644,"date":"2016-12-16T19:52:00","date_gmt":"2016-12-16T19:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lbpost.com\/articles\/life\/arts-culture\/arts-council-to-receive-20-000-nea-grant-to-support-cambodia-town-mural-project\/"},"modified":"2016-12-16T19:52:00","modified_gmt":"2016-12-16T19:52:00","slug":"arts-council-to-receive-20-000-nea-grant-to-support-cambodia-town-mural-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/art\/arts-council-to-receive-20-000-nea-grant-to-support-cambodia-town-mural-project","title":{"rendered":"Arts Council to Receive $20,000 NEA Grant to Support Cambodia Town Mural Project"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-52094\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/canbodiamural.jpg\" alt=\"canbodiamural\" width=\"640\" height=\"242\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Image courtesy of the Arts Council for Long Beach.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Arts Council for Long Beach will receive a $20,000 Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), it was announced today.<\/p>\n<p>NEA Chairman Jane Chu approved more than $30 million in grants as part of the independent federal agency\u2019s first major funding announcement for fiscal year 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The Art Works category is the NEA\u2019s largest and focuses on \u201cthe creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts and the strengthening of communities through the arts,\u201d according to the agency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe arts are for all of us, and by supporting organizations such as the Arts Council for Long Beach, the National Endowment for the Arts is providing more opportunities for the public to engage with the arts,\u201d Chu said in a statement. \u201cWhether in a theater, a town square, a museum or a hospital, the arts are everywhere and make our lives richer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The grant will support the arts council\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/life\/arts-culture\/learn-more-about-the-cambodia-town-mural-project-during-two-community-meetings\/\">Cambodia Town Mural Project<\/a>, an initiative that will add up to nine public murals along Anaheim Street between Long Beach Boulevard and Junipero Avenue by summer.<\/p>\n<p>The project is in partnership with Cambodia Town Inc., the United Cambodian Community (UCC), Homeland Cultural Center and the offices of Councilmembers Dee Andrews and Daryl Supernaw. Participants of all ages will conceive, design and paint the mural.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUCC is looking forward to the partnership with Arts Council, Cambodia Town, Inc. and Homeland Cultural Center,\u201d said UCC Director Susana Sngiem in a statement. \u201cThe murals will create community pride in Cambodia Town and unite the diverse community in increasing the vitality and beauty of the neighborhood. Community members are very excited to showcase the beauty and values in Cambodia Town.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Up to eight murals will be painted by artists chosen through the Call for Artists, which the arts council will announce in late January.
