So, in the spirit of Arts Month, we at the <\/em>Post<em> have partnered with the Arts Council for Long Beach to bring you our <\/em>October Arts Month of Murals<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Using the Arts Council\u2019s working database of the wide array of murals located throughout the city, once a week during the month of October we\u2019ll bring to your attention five murals that you may have never heard of or had a chance to visit yet, grouped under one cohesive theme and plotted on a comprehensive map. So, whether you choose to visit each one or just read about them, you can find out where they are, who they were painted by and when they were completed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Read below to learn about five education-related murals in Long Beach and thank you for reading our <em>October Arts Months of Murals<\/em> series.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Education<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-51326\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/156_Education_Success01.jpg\" alt=\"156 Education Success01\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>Images courtesy of the Arts Council for Long Beach.<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Education by Georgia-born artist Elliott Pinkney was completed in 1990 with the help of assistant George LeChevallier and a group of woodshop students from Hughes Middle School.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-51327\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/156_Education_Success02.jpg\" alt=\"156 Education Success02\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Located at the Educational Partnership High School, the mural depicts the \u201cwonders of education,\u201d according to the Arts Council, and shows flags of different countries, silhouetted images of children and proud fists holding diplomas thrust upward. A dove hovers over the composition, signifying world peace.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-51328\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/156_Education_Success03.jpg\" alt=\"156 Education Success03\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The vibrant mural by local artist Elliot Pinkney illustrates the wonders of education. The powerful message that education is universal is clearly depicted by the many flags of different countries and the different colored silhouetted images of children. Illustrated are fists rising in the air holding diplomas and a peaceful dove hovering over the composition, suggesting world peace.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Pinkney\u2019s myriad murals throughout Los Angeles, especially Compton, depicting people enacting social change, were influenced by Mexican muralists in how they illustrate social statements, the artist <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/1989-08-31\/news\/vw-2082_1_mural-art\">told the Los Angeles Times<\/a>\u00a0for an article published in 1989.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Armonia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-51329\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/79_Armonia.jpg\" alt=\"79 Armonia\" width=\"640\" height=\"324\" \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>Image courtesy of the Arts Council for Long Beach.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Created by Bolivian-born, local artist Ramon Rodriguez and Patrick Henry Elementary School\u2019s graduating class of 2015, Armonia, which translates to \u201cHarmony\u201d from Spanish, shows Earth as a home with a front door entrance and a roof, according to the Arts Council.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Completed in June 2015, the \u201centrance\u201d to the planet leads to a staircase made of books and a community gathering atop the largest book. Earth stands a symbol of \u201chumanity\u2019s home\u201d while the books are symbolic of knowledge, according to the Arts Council.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oduVaROuTRc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>Video of Presentaci\u00f3n del mural Armon\u00eda.<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe beauty of Ramon&#8217;s paintings is the bridge that draws or invites people to begin contemplation and exploration,\u201d said Ramon\u2019s wife Debbie, in a 2010 interview with the <em>Post<\/em>.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; float: left;\">\n<div style=\"width: 100px; height: 100px; background-image: url(); background-size: cover; background-position: center center; float: left; margin-right: 30px; display:none;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<p> <small style=\"font-weight: lighter;\">RELATED<\/small> <\/p>\n<h2 ><a onclick=\"ga('send', 'event', 'Related Link', 'click', 'Realted Link v1');\" href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/life\/harmonizing-opposite-forces-ram-n-rodriguez\/\">Harmonizing Opposite Forces: Ram\u00f3n Rodriguez<\/a><\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Expand Your Mind With Science<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-51330\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/1.jpeg\" alt=\"1\" width=\"640\" height=\"439\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>Images courtesy of the Arts Council for Long Beach.<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The late pioneer scientist Albert Einstein is depicted in Expand Your Mind With Science by artist Richard Brandt and youth assistants Abel Beltran, Danny Corona, Fernando Medrano, Mario Medrano and David Quinones, with help from students of Washington Middle School science classes, according to the Arts Council.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-51331\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2.jpeg\" alt=\"2\" width=\"640\" height=\"439\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Completed in 1994 and located on Washington Middle School\u2019s playground exterior, art and science merge as Brandt\u2019s design illustrates topics students learn in class, such as biology, geology and astronomy and also illustrates students studying.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-51332\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/4.jpeg\" alt=\"4\" width=\"640\" height=\"439\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Learning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-51333\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/learning.jpg\" alt=\"learning\" width=\"640\" height=\"348\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>Screenshot taken from Google Street View.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Ann Phong\u2019s Learning was completed in 1993 at Eddie\u2019s Liquor with the help of youth assistants Nebra Flewellen, Renita Harper and Kelvin Murray, according to the Arts Council, with special appreciation to Chang Youm of United Realty, Grace and Myeong Hong of Eddie&#8217;s Liquor and the Northwest Long Beach Neighborhood Chapter.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Phong was born in Saigon, fled to Vietnam in 1981 and spent a year living in Malaysia and the Philippines in refugee camps before she traveled to Southern California, according to the Los Angeles Mural Conservancy. She teaches at California State University, Fullerton and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Dunitz, who took the below up-close photo, interprets the mural as \u201cthe people in the northeast Long Beach community are represented by a variety of hands of different colors\u201d for the Guide to 1000 Los Angeles Murals.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-51334\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/robindunitz.jpg\" alt=\"robindunitz\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>Image courtesy of the Los Angeles Mural Conservancy, taken by Robin Dunitz.<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>The Family, Education, in Harmony, Welcome<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-51335\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/family.jpg\" alt=\"family\" width=\"640\" height=\"324\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>Image taken from Google Street View.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Paul Botello and youth assistants Alex Castro and Meshel Naraez completed this mural painted on the California Aquatic Therapy and Wellness Center in 1989. Located on the corner of Long Beach Boulevard and 68th Street, the piece depicts an aquatic education in action.<\/p>\n<p>Born and raised in East Los Angeles, Botello has completed myriad murals in the area, including one at the Boyle Heights Metro Station (now closed), and has also traveled to Berlin, Germany to collaborate on a giant mural, according to Metro.
