Next Sunday, on October 30, Haute Dogs will present the event that evokes the longest continual \u201cAwwwww!\u201d anywhere from a crowd (see Mark Your Calendars for details). Whatever it is about dogs (and any pet) in costumes that\u2019s both adorable and highlights their personalities, our shelter at Long Beach Animal Care Services<\/a>, 7700 East Spring Street at the El Dorado Park Entrance (parking is free for visitors to the shelters) got it going with their adoptables. \"Popeye<\/p>\n

Popeye<\/strong> has decided that a pirate is the closest thing to a sailor man he\u2019d want to be. However, when he goes trick-or-treating (and you can see that he has that in mind), he\u2019s not going to give a big \u201cArrr!\u201d (or however you spell it) when you offer him jerky or a peanut butter biscuit. Instead, he\u2019ll take it gently from your hand and give it a lick for good measure. At a year old, he\u2019s playful but also gentle. He\u2019s nonreactive to other dogs as well. \"Glinda<\/strong><\/p>\n

Why Glinda<\/strong> didn\u2019t dress as her Oz namesake is beyond us\u2014she\u2019s sure good\u2014but she felt that she\u2019d look better in blue. This miniature poodle is about 6 years old and has all the goodness of a good witch, but she\u2019s pretty playful and knows how to \u201cLet It Go!\u201d in the play area! Hoshi <\/strong>wants to be a prisoner\u2014of love! He\u2019s a cute 6-year-old Lhasa apso mix who\u2019s a stellar communicator with other pets and people. He may be small, but his personality is huge! He\u2019s also very smart and charming, understanding well that special relationship between himself and a special human. Just as civilians show their support for and honor veterans every year (that\u2019s correct, it\u2019s never<\/i> enough), animal advocates and their dogs attend parades like ours in Long Beach to remember the dogs and other animals that died in service to our country. Friends of Long Beach Animals (FOLBA)<\/a>\u00a0will be bringing their dogs to march in the Veterans Day parade and invites anyone either with or without a furry buddy to march along with them. Come early in order to find a parking space, be sure that you have water on hand for you and your dog, and mind the advisory\u2014if you feel that your dog may be nervous around parade noise and horses, it\u2019s best that he or she stays home. This year, it\u2019s all returning\u2014including Hop Kong Phooey, the aforementioned IPA\u2014with all the photo booths, live music, vendor tables with free samples, performances and adoption rescues. All proceeds from the sale of the Hop Kong Phooey will benefit Guide Dogs of the Blind<\/a>. No dog? Come anyway\u2014maybe, just maybe, you\u2019ll adopt a new best friend!<\/p>\n

Beginning this Sunday, February 21, the Society for California Veterinary and Vaccine Care\u00a0(SCVVC)<\/a> will offer free spay\/neuter procedures and wellness services to residents of the cities served by ACS: Long Beach, Signal Hill, Cerritos, Los Alamitos and Seal Beach. During the remaining weeks of the month, Spay\/Neuter Project Los Angeles (SNP\/LA)\u00a0will offer low-cost vaccines<\/a>, nail trimmings and topical flea treatment for residents of the same areas. Pet owners must be 18 years or older. All pets must be on leashes or in carriers. Only healthy and non-pregnant animals will be vaccinated.
