So, in the spirit of Arts Month, we at the <em>Post<\/em> have partnered with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artslb.org\/\">Arts Council for Long Beach<\/a> to bring you our <em>October Arts Month of Murals<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Using the Arts Council\u2019s working database of the wide array of murals located throughout the city, once a week during the month of October we\u2019ll bring to your attention five murals that you may have never heard of or had a chance to visit yet, grouped under one cohesive theme and plotted on a comprehensive map. So, whether you choose to visit each one or just read about them, you can find out where they are, who they were painted by and when they were completed.<\/p>\n<p>Read below to learn about five music-related murals in Long Beach (and stay tuned for next week\u2019s list).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nate Dogg Tribute<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-50946\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/natedog.jpg\" alt=\"natedog\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo courtesy of Homeland Cultural Center.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Following the cancellation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MeetingOfStylesWorldwide\/\">Meeting of Styles<\/a>\u00a0in San Francisco, a forum for the international urban art community founded in Germany nearly 15 years ago, Chicago graffiti artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/dmnology\/\">Demon<\/a>\u00a0and Avignon graffiti artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sockgraffiti\/%20\">Sock<\/a>\u00a0traveled to Long Beach last month.<\/p>\n<p>The two had already heard of Homeland Cultural Center, and contacted Jose Martinez, the organization\u2019s murals coordinator, who gave them the go-ahead to paint there, according to Community Services Supervisor James Ruggirello.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing from out of town, they associate Long Beach and the hip hop scene with <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/life\/music\/we-got-love-celebrating-nate-dogg-s-44th-birthday\/\">Nate Dogg<\/a>[&#8230;],\u201d said Ruggirello. \u201cThe inscription \u2018All Dogz Go To Heaven\u2019 refers to a tribute song by rapper The Game. Nate Dogg died in 2011. The other letters are the artists&#8217; initials and various dates. Long Beach City was the cocoon that made it possible for that caterpillar to turn into a butterfly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Community of Music<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-50949\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/communityofmusic1.jpg\" alt=\"communityofmusic1\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Screenshot of an image captured by Google Street View in April.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Completed in 1989 by Compton-raised artist Ben Valenzuela and assistants Brittany Powers, Glen Sabalza, Opie Ortiz and Art Valenzuela, <em>Community of Music<\/em> depicts different styles of music being performed by people in different parts of the world. The mural was sponsored by the Long Beach Department of Parks and Recreation, according to information available through <a href=\"http:\/\/digitallibrary.usc.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/p15799coll15\/id\/1825\">USC Digital Library<\/a>.<a href=\"http:\/\/digitallibrary.usc.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/p15799coll15\/id\/1825\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can learn a lot from taking in the variety of instruments and cultures depicted in the mural,\u201d states the Arts Council\u2019s description of the mural. \u201c<em>Community of Music<\/em> portrays how important music is for different cultures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Located on the exterior of the playground wall at George Washington Middle School, the mural was a part of the Mural Mentor Project, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.muralconservancy.org\/murals\/community-music\">Los Angeles Mural Conservancy<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Three years after the mural was completed, Valenzuela would earn his MFA from Cal State Long Beach and, alongside Trace Fukuhara and Heather Green, mentor 80 youth in Long Beach to create a series of portable murals throughout the city, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.muralconservancy.org\/murals\/westside-montage\"><em>Westside Montage<\/em><\/a>, according to the conservancy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sublime Tribute<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-50950\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Sublime_Jonas_Never.JPG\" alt=\"Sublime Jonas Never\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo courtesy of the Arts Council for Long Beach.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Commissioned by Floyd\u2019s 99 Barbershop, Venice-based artist Jonas Never completed this tribute to Sublime in July 2015. The work depicts a few different shots of Bradley Nowell, his dalmatian Lou Dog, the Queen Mary, Nowell\u2019s son Jakob as a baby and Opie Ortiz\u2019 iconic sun, pictured on the 1992 <em>40oz. To Freedom<\/em> album.<\/p>\n<p>Underneath the Old English lettering spelling out \u201cLong Beach\u201d, a section of the mural pictures lyrics from the song, &#8220;What I Got,&#8221; \u201cLife is too short so love the one you got,\u201d that was released on Sublime\u2019s third album in 1996.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-50951\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/sublimemural.jpg\" alt=\"sublimemural\" width=\"640\" height=\"382\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Screenshot from Jonas Never\u2019s Instagram <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/never1959\/\">@never1959<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The artist, known for painting iconic athletes and influencers, says his first real mural was with Floyd\u2019s 99 Barbershop in West Los Angeles, he told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cladlifestylecompany.com\/jonas-never\"><em>Clad<\/em>\u00a0in an interview<\/a>.
