{"id":175,"date":"2019-03-13T14:54:01","date_gmt":"2019-03-13T21:54:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/?p=999942204"},"modified":"2019-03-13T14:54:01","modified_gmt":"2019-03-13T21:54:01","slug":"plated-and-served-inspires-kids-to-create-joy-for-seniors-and-their-four-legged-family-members","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/pets\/plated-and-served-inspires-kids-to-create-joy-for-seniors-and-their-four-legged-family-members","title":{"rendered":"Plated and Served inspires kids to create joy for seniors and their four-legged family members"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_999942210\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-999942210\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-999942210 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/cute-girl-drawing--e1552513462389-970x838.jpeg\" alt=\"Girl in red shirt, with long blond hair, sits at a table with other children, smiling at the camera and making colorful signs for seniors.\" width=\"600\" height=\"518\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-999942210\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Mona Ueda<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On Saturday, March 9, kids ages 6 to 16 sat around tables and on the floor in the Marina Community Center creating cards, decorating boxes, and stuffing socks and felt to make homemade toys for pets of homebound seniors.<\/p>\n<p>Plated and Served with Love to Seniors and Their Pets was the second annual incarnation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allforgood.org\/organization\/seal-beach-animal-care-center-sbacc\">Seal Beach Animal Care Center<\/a>\u2019s effort to inspire others in the community, children in particular, to express the same unselfishness and compassion that their shelter receives from the public.<\/p>\n<p>Seal Beach Animal Care Services, as its website states, \u201cis a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter committed to finding permanent, loving homes for all the animals that come into our care.\u201d The shelter is run solely by volunteers and keeps itself in kibble and veterinary-bill payments through fundraising, legacies, grants and public donations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re blessed as a shelter because we have such generous donors\u2014people who donate to our cause\u2014not just money, but walking dogs, dropping off towels and food, so we decided to pass it forward,\u201d shelter volunteer Karen Millet said. \u201cWe really believe in giving back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Plated and Served chose Long Beach Rescue Mission as its beneficiary. Clients and their pets received gifts of blankets, pet food and other goodies.<\/p>\n<p>This year, homebound seniors who depend on Meals on Wheels for both food and socialization received, along with their own food, tray favors like handmade pet-themed napkin rings, food for their pets, and pet toys made by enthusiastic kids from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lionsclubs.org\/en\/resources-for-members\/resource-center\/leo-lions-club\">Leo Lions Club<\/a> and the younger children whose families brought them.<\/p>\n<p>Millet told of one family who brought their only child because they wanted to teach him \u201cthe importance of working together and for the good of others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey really showed their talents,\u201d Millet said.<\/p>\n<p>Who\u2019ll get the goodies next year?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have no idea,\u201d Millet said. \u201cWe take them as they come!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Seal Beach Animal Care Center is located at 1700 Adolfo Lopez Drive, Seal Beach. Like all shelters and rescues, they need volunteers whose focus is the well-being and positive outcome for otherwise unwanted pets. Anyone who wants to walk dogs, empty litter boxes, is computer savvy, wants to drive animals to veterinary appointments, or doesn\u2019t\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>mind doing a load of laundry can call during shelter hours at 562-430-4993 and fill out a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbacc.org\/volunteering\/\">volunteer application<\/a>.
