{"id":1787,"date":"2016-08-15T23:54:18","date_gmt":"2016-08-15T23:54:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lbpost.com\/articles\/life\/food\/linden-public\/"},"modified":"2016-08-15T23:54:18","modified_gmt":"2016-08-15T23:54:18","slug":"linden-public","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/food\/linden-public","title":{"rendered":"Linden Public Opens in East Village with American-Moroccan Fare"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-40973\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/DSC_0558.JPG\" alt=\"DSC 0558\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Photos by Asia Morris.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Linden Public, the revamped coffee shop, bar and bistro located on the corner of Linden Avenue and Broadway in the East Village of downtown Long Beach, celebrated its official grand opening on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>What used to be a coffee shop and cafe dubbed the Greenhouse is now an eatery that still offers locally sourced coffee, from both Rose Park Roasters and Stumptown Coffee Roasters, but now offers a great deal more, including additional and heartier menu fare, as well as later hours, a bar, a completely redone interior and a massive parklet outside.<\/p>\n<p>Hend Elarabi, who owned Greenhouse as well as ASHA, the former Moroccan Mediterranean restaurant that was located in the neighboring space, which Thai District now occupies, felt the best way to start over after closing that business was to wipe the slate clean.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always wanted to be my own boss, so I wasn\u2019t going to give that up after I had to part ways with ASHA,\u201d Elarabi told the Downtown Long Beach Associates (DLBA). \u201c[&#8230;]with Greenhouse being right next door, I just felt like a new slate was the best way to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-50072\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DSC_0589.JPG\" alt=\"DSC 0589\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the location has lost a bit of its coffee shop charm, where pale green paint on the walls and a plethora of indoor plants upstairs characterized a popular space for locals to chill out and put in a day\u2019s work. However Linden Public offers a place to be productive and then some, seeking to \u201cprovide a roof for our multicultural society with somewhere as diverse as its surroundings,\u201d according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelindenpublic.com\/blog\/announcements\/a-love-letter-to-our-beloved-city\/\">Love Letter to Long Beach<\/a>, written in April.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[&#8230;] we\u2019ve created a space to share specialty coffee, crafted libations, good food, local music, artwork and independent ideas,\u201d the letter continues.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-50073\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DSC_0568.JPG\" alt=\"DSC 0568\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>The LP Burger: ground beef, sliced pineapple, red onion, bacon, provolone cheese, Roma tomatoes and spicy aioli.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The east village establishment now boasts a bar, where craft beers, wine and handmade cocktails are served, and it\u2019s also open late on Fridays and Saturdays until midnight. The new bistro menu is overwhelmingly extensive with breakfast, lunch options with everything from paninis, to basmati rice-based bowls, to a hearty LP Burger with sliced pineapple, bacon and spicy aioli.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Patrons] like the fact that they can do beer and wine and coffee all at the same time,\u201d Elarabi told the <em>Post,<\/em> when asked\u00a0whether Greenhouse regulars have responded positively to the change. \u201cThey like that they can have a coffee to start their work and then beer or a glass of wine to finish up their day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-50074\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DSC_0576.JPG\" alt=\"DSC 0576\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The idea behind Linden Public follows the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/business\/small-business\/brass-lamp-book-bar-s-opening-a-testament-to-the-importance-of-city-support-for-startups\/\">Brass Lamp<\/a>-esque\u00a0concept that creativity can be paired with more than just coffee, including food and alcoholic libations as well, to facilitate patrons&#8217; creative thinking and productive consumption. Now you can enjoy a glass of wine as you write your dissertation, business plan or host your monthly employee gathering. Two of the must-try items are the Mango Salmon Bowl and Lemon Caper Salmon Bowl, where Elarabi\u2019s Moroccan heritage shines through.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like ASHA with more of an American flair, something that people can relate to,\u201d she explained. \u201cAnd that\u2019s where the Greenhouse helped me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-44341\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSC_0564.JPG\" alt=\"DSC 0564\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Lemon Caper Salmon Bowl: grilled salmon topped with white wine capers served over basmati rice and a side salad with hummus.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Elarabi and her team hosted three rounds of tastings with 15 different friends and family members for the entire menu. Different types of salmon, sauces and the like were used for each taster to try, with the Mango Salmon Bowl coming through as one of the biggest hits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s how we handled all our food and with my background being from Morocco, I was able to incorporate some of those flavors and spices,\u201d she said. \u201cThe lamb burger, the falafel, the mango salmon, all of that has a bit of a cultural connection with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-50075\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DSC_0554.JPG\" alt=\"DSC 0554\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>The Tawook Wrap: marinated grilled chicken breast, spicy garlic aioli, basmati rice, arugula and tomatoes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Several of the complaints written on Yelp are based on growing pains typical to a new eatery; however, the smoke emanating from the exposed kitchen into the eating area is an issue that has been 50 percent dealt with, said Elarabi, who wants her patrons to know it\u2019s a problem that is being addressed as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to create a place I would hang out at,\u201d Elarabi told the DLBA. \u201cI wanted to bring back what a lot of people felt they had with The Greenhouse but even better\u2026 We have some kinks to work out but we\u2019ll get there.
