If you\u2019re on any page dedicated to the adoption, rescue or welfare of animals, you\u2019ll feel horribly sad and frustrated at the number of animals who have been pulled from the streets or cruel situations by\u2014the word <i>angels<\/i> irks me mainly because the people who save these poor creatures are human, and there\u2019s nothing supernatural about their acts. It\u2019s their <i>nature.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The animals who are fortunate enough to get saved are just drops in a big bucket. Sometimes, the pets don\u2019t make it, and this is devastating for everyone involved. There are needs for the ones who do as well\u2014fosters, adoptive homes and help with medical bills. Everyone\u2019s heart is big enough; not so for wallets and homes. But then, there\u2019s the <a href=\"http:\/\/pawswakefield.rescuegroups.org\/info\/display?PageID=9457\">story\u00a0about the starfish<\/a> that my rescuer friend Darlene tells herself every day about the guy who was throwing starfish back into the ocean to save them from drying out in the hot sun. As he tossed one in, a passerby asked what he was doing, and the guy explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the beach is covered with hundreds of starfish!\u201d the passerby exclaimed. \u201cYou can\u2019t save them all! What difference will it make?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The guy looked after the starfish he just threw in and answered, \u201cIt made a difference to that one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Want to make a difference to one? Here are a couple of candidates. They\u2019ll need homes, too, when they\u2019re feeling better.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-50018\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Honor.jpg\" alt=\"Honor\" width=\"620\" height=\"625\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is <strong>Honor<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/JellicleCatsRescueFoundation\/?fref=ts%20\">Jellicle Cats Rescue Foundation<\/a>\u00a0was contacted by a woman looking for help for the cat on behalf of a neighbor. Honor looked as if she had a broken jaw\u2014Heaven knows how. And she\u2019d had kittens at the shelter as well, now in their foster home. The next day, Honor was brought to<a href=\"%20http:\/www.longbeach.gov\/acs\"> Long Beach Animal Care Services<\/a>. Jellicle Cats pulled her and took her to <a href=\"http:\/\/primaryvetcare.com\/\">Primary Care Animal Hospital<\/a>\u00a0where she was examined and X-rayed. A couple of them have stayed forever, of course, but Hoffmann knows her limits\u2014sort of. The dog in this photo is one of a family of four\u2014dad here, a mom and two puppies\u2014that had been inside an apartment all day and night without once going for walks\u2014not even to pee, Hoffmann said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe neglect these animals went through is something a regular person simply can&#8217;t comprehend,\u201d Hoffmann said on her Facebook page. \u201cThey have never seen a vet and clearly no groomer either. Dad was somatted that he could barely move. I can only imagine the pain he must have felt covered in all these mats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looks a lot better now\u2014a face that someone will be able to love. The mom had had three litters, all of which were given away indiscriminately. They\u2019re safe now in a foster. They\u2019ve been spayed or neutered, given shots, dental care, vet exams and everything else they needed. Mom and dad were taken by <a href=\"http:\/\/pricelesspetrescue.org\/\">Priceless Pet Rescue<\/a>, the two puppies went with <a href=\"http:\/\/4liferescue.org\/\">4Life Animal Rescue<\/a>, and a very hefty vet bill stayed with Hoffmann.
