A couple of rechargeable amps, a guitar, one bass, an electronic synth pad and a modestly sized drum kit\u2014it\u2019s not much, but it\u2019s all they need.<\/p>\n<p>As they tune their instruments and check their sound levels, the group chats and jokes among themselves, obviously happy to see their friends again. But happier still that in just a few minutes they\u2019ll be jamming together as they\u2019ve done for years.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Homesick for Homeland: Sound Army musicians bring live music to the beach\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pV1HsO9GH0s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This motley crew of musicians all hail from a music program known as <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/hi-lo\/i-can-be-free-for-a-generation-homelands-instant-band-has-produced-a-sound-army\">Instant Band<\/a>, a weekly music jam session running out of Homeland Cultural Center in MacArthur Park that invites anyone interested in music performance a chance to experience what it\u2019s like to play in a band.<\/p>\n<p>For the last 20 years, the Instant Band program has been alive at Homeland until COVID-19 prompted the cultural center to temporarily close in March. For the program\u2019s most devoted members, who call themselves the Sound Army, the loss of the weekly program has been hard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s definitely a culture shock. After his grandmother\u2019s death and a car accident just two days after, that completely wrecked his car, Silva said he was in a dark place. As a way to lift himself out of depression he started going to Instant Band and hasn\u2019t stopped coming since.<\/p>\n<p>Through the program he says he\u2019s been able to explore his own music tastes and style as a beatmaker and hip-hop artist, but he\u2019s also made some lifelong friends, some of whom he\u2019d only get to see during the weekly jam sessions.<\/p>\n<p>Going without seeing Instant Band\u2019s founder, Orlando Greenhill or \u201cGeneral Greenhill\u201d as he\u2019s been nicknamed, has been an adjustment for the group, too. Regarded as a mentor, those who know him all speak of the profound impact he\u2019s had in their lives. From instilling a love for music, to teaching his pupils to see the good in everything, all have learned something from the general.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there\u2019s one thing Orlando instilled in us it\u2019s that we gotta make the best with what we got, and that\u2019s what we\u2019re doing with this,\u201d 23-year-old Joseph Stowers said. \u201cWe\u2019re just homesick for playing in the company of Orlando [\u2026] so this is our vice to get us through quarantine without live music right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Losers at School Beach Jam Session, which is named after Silva and Stower\u2019s weekly Long Beach-themed podcast, The Losers at School, happens every second and last Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. Homeland alum Jesus \u201cJessie\u201d Amezcua and Paul \u201cDonut\u201d Havrell and Sebastian Calvillo make up the other musicians who complete the group jam session, picking back up where Instant Band left off.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10000024587\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10000024587\" style=\"width: 1110px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10000024587\" src=\"https:\/\/img.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/24111259\/0723-Band-9-1110x582.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1110\" height=\"582\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10000024587\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Donut gets his time on the bass guitar as members from the Homeland Cultural Arts Center perform at Cherry Beach in Long Beach Wednesday, July 22, 2020. Cordova.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In compliance with social distancing, the group has signs posted asking people to maintain a six-foot distance from them in addition to keeping a fair distance from each other when not wearing masks. They also aren\u2019t accepting any cash tips.<\/p>\n<p>A month into the beachside shows and they admit this was exactly what they were needing and now they immensely look forward to playing music there every week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, it\u2019s a relief,\u201d Silva said. \u201cI had so much going on as far as stress is concerned [\u2026] and once we got together it was just magic. Everything was magic, I didn\u2019t have to think about nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stowers says the group plans on coming out every other Thursday until COVID-19 is over and live music returns to the city.
