{"id":18572,"date":"2020-08-13T14:56:51","date_gmt":"2020-08-13T21:56:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/hi-lo\/?p=30000013603"},"modified":"2020-08-13T14:59:13","modified_gmt":"2020-08-13T21:59:13","slug":"addison-francisco-pancho-flores-dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/addison-francisco-pancho-flores-dead","title":{"rendered":"Francisco Flores, who opened Pancho&#8217;s Mexican Restaurant in 1966, dies at 89"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Francisco Flores\u2014founder of Pancho&#8217;s Mexican Restaurant on Pacific Coast Highway\u2014has died at the age of 89.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPancho\u2019s was the place to go for a great Mexican lunch in my college days,&#8221; said Councilmember Roberto Uranga. &#8220;It was also my place for lunch every Tuesday after auctions at the tow yard. I miss those days and I will miss Pancho.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Flores was born in Long Beach but returned to his family&#8217;s original homeland in Mexico during the Great Depression. He told people that he always knew he would return to America and did, opening Pancho&#8217;s Mexican Restaurant in 1966. With more than a 50-year history, it is one of the city&#8217;s oldest, continuously-run restaurants.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10000025833\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10000025833\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/13130619\/Pancho.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10000025833 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/img.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/13130619\/Pancho-1110x1110.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10000025833\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A collage from Councilmember Daryl Supernaw during the 50th Anniversary celebration for Pancho&#8217;s in 2016. Courtesy of Daryl Supernaw.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It was a space that marked the definitive style of Mexican-American food institutions: Brown, padded booths showered in golden light from rust-colored lamps while hand-painted portraits of an idyllic Mexican life\u2014horse-drawn carriages, women in colorful dresses, hills and pastures hung on the walls.<\/p>\n<p>The menu was an invitation to a cuisine that began to define many Californians&#8217; first taste of Mexican food: tacos dorados stuffed with ground beef and lettuce and guacamole, refried beans slathered in copious amounts of cheese, red-tinged rice, burritos the size of a small baby and drenched in enchilada sauce&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10000025817\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10000025817\" style=\"width: 1110px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/13112859\/o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10000025817\" src=\"https:\/\/img.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/13112859\/o-1110x832.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1110\" height=\"832\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10000025817\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pancho&#8217;s menu from 1966.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;Pancho was a quiet giant in our community,&#8221; financial advisor and friend Ben Goldberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/benjamin.a.goldberg\/posts\/10220927828958122\">wrote on Facebook<\/a>. &#8220;He would support the local kids&#8217; sports teams, churches and many people in need throughout his life&#8230; He came from humble beginnings, but left this world a better place and, in the process, epitomized the American Spirit with hard work and smart business and life decisions. I believe he has ensured that Pancho&#8217;s will be able to continue for years with the help and permission of his niece and nephew. I was honored to know him and I\u2019m better for it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fourth District Councilman Daryl Supernaw honored Flores by closing this past Tuesday\u2019s City Council meeting in his memory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was so humble, yet, you want to talk about the American Dream?
