{"id":196,"date":"2019-02-28T17:00:26","date_gmt":"2019-03-01T01:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/?p=999939442"},"modified":"2019-02-28T17:00:26","modified_gmt":"2019-03-01T01:00:26","slug":"in-pictures-video-massive-willow-sculpture-at-long-beach-museum-takes-shape","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/art\/in-pictures-video-massive-willow-sculpture-at-long-beach-museum-takes-shape","title":{"rendered":"IN PICTURES &#038; VIDEO: Massive willow sculpture at Long Beach museum takes shape"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Massive willow sculpture at Long Beach museum takes shape\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NLv8J4LRavY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Over the last three decades, sculptor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stickwork.net\/\">Patrick Dougherty <\/a>has built hundreds of environmental works around the world, his whimsical willow-stick structures enchanting art and nature lovers alike.<\/p>\n<p>Long Beach now has one of its own; Dougherty just finished a site-specific installation at the Long Beach Museum of Art and it&#8217;s ready for viewers to experience starting this Friday, March 1, and yes you can walk inside the &#8220;vessels&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Dougherty and his son, Sam, with the help of volunteers and museum staff, have been building and shaping the 15-foot-tall structures for the past three weeks, digging holes, setting stakes, erecting scaffolding, cutting willow and assembling the stalks into their vase-shaped forms.<\/p>\n<p>The willow branches were harvested from Owens Valley earlier this month\u2014a nearly five-hour drive from Long Beach\u2014where Dougherty showed staff how to cut and collect the material. They brought back three truck beds full of 30- to 40-pound bundles over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Bte4YiGB0RB\/\">multiple trips<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The five, nest-like vessels are a nod to the museum\u2019s permanent collection, which includes ceramics from the 17th century to more contemporary works, with a selection of earthenware ceramics permanently displayed in the museum.<\/p>\n<p>Dougherty, who waited to complete the installation before giving it a name, called it &#8220;Buddy Buddy,&#8221; with the lidded vessels leaning into each other.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Buddy Buddy\u2018s design was inspired by the Museum\u2019s collection of ceramics,&#8221; Dougherty said in an email. &#8220;I took great liberty with that idea and imported country pottery shapes from North Carolina. The work needed to be crowded into the available space, which led to a familiarity among the five elements.
