Images courtesy of the Museum of Latin American Art.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) is celebrating 20 years as the only museum in the US dedicated to modern and contemporary Latin American art. Alongside a weekend of festivities, including a free family festival, the museum will open <em>MOLAA at Twenty: 1996\u20132016<\/em>, the largest showing of MOLAA&#8217;s Permanent Collection ever presented on Saturday at 7:00PM, MOLAA announced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am pleased to be at the helm of this venerable institution during this milestone year as we celebrate our 20th Anniversary, our <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/life\/arts-culture\/molaa-joins-highest-rank-of-american-museums-nationwide-with-new-accreditation\/\">recent accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums <\/a>and the growing relevance of our mission to the community,\u201d stated Stuart Ashman, MOLAA\u2019s president and CEO.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; float: left;\">\n<div style=\"width: 100px; height: 100px; background-image: url('images\/asia\/molaa_banner.jpg'); background-size: cover; background-position: center center; float: left; margin-right: 30px; display:none;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<p> <small style=\"font-weight: lighter;\">RELATED<\/small> <\/p>\n<h2 ><a onclick=\"ga('send', 'event', 'Related Link', 'click', 'Realted Link v1');\" href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/life\/arts-culture\/molaa-joins-highest-rank-of-american-museums-nationwide-with-new-accreditation\/\">MOLAA Joins Highest Rank of American Museums Nationwide with New Accreditation<\/a><\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<p>Curated by Edward Hayes, <em>MOLAA at Twenty: 1996\u20132016<\/em>, follows the evolution of the museum\u2019s collection, starting with works from Founder Dr. Robert Gumbiner\u2019s personal collection and incorporating acquisitions made over the past 20 years. The exhibition draws from over 1,600 artworks from more than 20 different countries and will remain in the galleries through the end of the year, with a rotation planned in July, according to the announcement.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-46987\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/M.2003.021_Otero_high.jpg\" alt=\"M.2003.021 Otero high\" width=\"640\" height=\"342\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Alejandro Otero, <\/em>Delta solar<em>, 1979.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Select artists on view in <em>MOLAA at Twenty<\/em> through July include Alexandre Arrechea, Leonora Carrington, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Dr. Atl, Roberto Fabelo, Le\u00f3n Ferrari, Carlos Garaicoa, Ramiro G\u00f3mez Jr., Osvaldo Guayasamin, Jos\u00e9 Gurvich, Judithe Hern\u00e1ndez, Wifredo Lam, Rodolfo Morales, Alejandro Otero, Esterio Segura, Jes\u00fas Rafael Soto, Rufino Tamayo, Francisco Toledo, Joaqu\u00edn Torres-Garcia and Patssi Valdez.<\/p>\n<p>Through humanitarian visits to Mexico, Central and South America, Gumbiner (1923\u20132009), was introduced to modern and contemporary Latin American art. His budding interest was cultivated with trips to Mexico as a Flying Samaritan, where he collected art by notable Oaxacan artists. The Founding Collection reflects Gumbiner\u2019s inclination toward figurative pieces that reference the culture in which they were produced, as well as paintings that incorporate a Cubist rendition of the figure.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-46988\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/P1051_Matta_high.jpg\" alt=\"P1051 Matta high\" width=\"640\" height=\"437\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Roberto Sebasti\u00e1n Matta, <\/em>R\u00f4le Renvers\u00e9 \/ Reverted Role<em>, 1987.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As he added works to his own collection, Gumbiner realized that although many of these Latin American artists were relatively unknown in the US, thus becoming the impetus for him to open MOLAA, a museum where he could share his collection with the public and educate audiences about modern and contemporary Latin American art.<\/p>\n<p><em>MOLAA at Twenty: 1996\u20132016<\/em>\u2019s opening reception will take place on Saturday, February 27 from 7:00PM to 9:00PM.
