{"id":2068,"date":"2016-02-09T00:08:56","date_gmt":"2016-02-09T00:08:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lbpost.com\/articles\/life\/arts-culture\/year-of-the-monkey\/"},"modified":"2016-02-09T00:08:56","modified_gmt":"2016-02-09T00:08:56","slug":"year-of-the-monkey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/art\/year-of-the-monkey","title":{"rendered":"InterTrend Celebrates the Year of the Monkey with Interactive Art Installation on Broadway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-46590\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/4b986478-6455-413c-ad82-f252627216bf.jpg\" alt=\"4b986478-6455-413c-ad82-f252627216bf\" width=\"640\" height=\"431\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo by Asia Morris.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>InterTrend Communications, arguably one of downtown\u2019s most art-savvy communication agencies, wants you to #revealthemonkey in celebration of the Lunar New Year today.<\/p>\n<p>An interactive installation in the form of a red envelope giveaway will unveil world-acclaimed artist James Jean\u2019s <em>Library of the Psychic Temple<\/em>, the first time the ink-on-paper piece has been presented to the public, and <em>Year of the Monkey<\/em>, a piece made for today\u2019s worldwide celebration of the Chinese New Year.<\/p>\n<p>As the estimated 2,200 red envelopes are peeled off InterTrend\u2019s ground floor windows, Jean\u2019s work, created for a previous project for the <a href=\"http:\/\/arrestedmotion.com\/2015\/03\/james-jean-psychic-temple-library-project-part-i\/\">communication agency\u2019s library<\/a>\u00a0and<em>\u00a0Year of the Monkey<\/em> will be revealed. The public and passersby are invited to take an envelope, not only to participate in the unveiling, but with the hope of receiving one of the few hidden prizes, such as a golden ticket for a rare signed <em>Library of the Psychic Temple<\/em> print, as well as cash and gift certificates to local eateries.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-46591\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/12654579_1022678947789874_8777782993463997428_n.jpg\" alt=\"12654579 1022678947789874 8777782993463997428 n\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Image courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/intertrend.communications\/timeline\">InterTrend Communications<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The installation was created by InterTrend\u2019s inhouse creative team through the direction of Brandon Shigeta and Jeff Staple, according to CEO Julia Huang, who each played a role in bringing <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/life\/arts-culture\/pow-wow-long-beach-has-officially-landed-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Long Beach\u2019s inaugural POW!WOW! to fruition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 100%; float: left;\" \/>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; float: left;\">\n<div style=\"width: 100px; height: 100px; background-image: url('images\/asia\/powwowvarden\/DSC_0042_900x600.jpg'); background-size: cover; background-position: center center; float: left; margin-right: 30px; display: none;\"><\/div>\n<p><small style=\"font-weight: lighter;\">RELATED<\/small><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/life\/arts-culture\/pow-wow-long-beach-has-officially-landed-4\/\">POW! Lands in Long Beach<\/a><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0;\"><\/div>\n<hr style=\"width: 100%; float: left;\" \/>\n<p>\u201cWe really wanted the community to be a part of the celebration and designed the unveiling of James Jean\u2019s art to be an interactive process,\u201d said Shigeta. \u201cI think we were successful in that people came to pull the red envelopes for good luck and started to see the artwork behind it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The red envelopes, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BBiEEG4wlpC\/?taken-by=jeffstaple\">Staple\u2019s Instagram post<\/a>, are steeped in Chinese history. From the Qin Dynasty to the present, red envelopes have symbolized bestowing (often with money inside of them) a bit of luck, protection and good fortune on the traditionally younger and\/or single receiver of the gift.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-46592\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/jeffstaple-yearofthemonkey.png\" alt=\"jeffstaple-yearofthemonkey\" width=\"620\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The idea came from a discussion within the office about holiday decoration for our building last year,&#8221; Shigeta continued. &#8220;We decided to focus and highlight Lunar New Year. The gifting of red envelopes was the most recognized ritual and provided a nice medium that could serve as a gift, a veil, and an identifiable object of attention.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After all the envelopes have been taken, <em>Year of the Monkey<\/em> will be on display for two weeks, while the <em>Library of the Psychic Temple<\/em> will remain for several months.
