Photos courtesy of Uzo Umeh.<\/em><\/p>\n Next Saturday, the warehouse lot owned by hot dog vendor Dogfellaz in Long Beach\u2019s lower westside will be hosting a promising showcase for hip-hop and electronic heads.<\/p>\n This second installation of Mob The Lot features sets from Soulection producer Zikomo, Coachella\u2019s DJ Alf Alpha, Low End Theory-featured Gypsy Mamba, Walnut Creek\u2019s female DJ collective Pxssygang, up-and-coming Philadelphia rapper uhlife and more.<\/p>\n Uzo Umeh, who moved to Long Beach from Nigeria when she was 11, is the founder and CEO of Loki MGMT, a hip-hop\/electronica-centric event-producing brand founded in 2011 under the motto, \u201cWe work so you can play.” As a radio show host at Cal State University Long Beach (CSULB) at the time, she embraced the workload of sifting through the underground goldmine and putting unknown names on air.<\/p>\n \u201cSo imagine YG, Kid Ink and Hopsin before they were really on mainstream channels,\u201d Umeh said. \u201cWe had all of them on air back in 2011. I wanted to apply that same research locally; I wanted my friends and community to know about the talent I knew about and loved.”<\/p>\n Soulection’s producer Zikomo.<\/em><\/p>\n Her first successful event came that following October. Held at The Nugget Bar on the CSULB campus, the NugFest showcased local artists such as psychedelic rock outfit Thy Squid and rapper Shugga Shane next to bigger names like Hopsin. The following year, Loki\u2019s event The Carnival brought to Long Beach Inglewood-native rapper Skeme, who is signed under The Game\u2019s label Blood Money Entertainment.<\/p>\n Loki has been growing steadily since with excursions to Sacramento, Fresno and San Diego, but Long Beach has remained the focal point. From 2012 to 2014, she paired with Palm Springs-based producer Alf Alpha following his performance at Coachella for a monthly residency called \u201cThe Pleyerz Club\u201d at Que Sera.<\/p>\n The company marked its four-year anniversary this past August at Harvelle\u2019s with a lineup including Soulection producers Niceguyxvinny and Zikomo. Loki\u2019s reach is widening with each show, as evident in the upcoming Mob the Lot, which will also feature live painting by local tattoo artist Dretty. Umeh says her goal is to help establish her hometown of Long Beach as a standard stop alongside LA for touring musicians.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m not a DJ or producer; I\u2019m actually pretty talentless when it comes to music production,\u201d Umeh concedes. \u201cBut years ago, I remember telling that to Dez Yusuf and he said, \u2018Your talent is finding talent.\u2019”<\/p>\n Mob the Lot takes place Saturday, January 23 from 9:00PM to 2:00AM at 2119 West Gaylord St. Long Beach.
