On Saturday, the Haute Dog team, headed by Santa Paws (who looks suspiciously like both Justin Rudd and Peter Krause, who looks like Justin Rudd), will be passing out treats, toys, supplies and other good things to all the good pets at shelters\u2014and that leaves none of them out. This would be a great opportunity for anyone having the desire and the space to fill out adoption papers\u2014you\u2019ll be pretty up close and personal! Here are five candidates from three local shelters in our vicinity: Long Beach Animal Care Services (ACS)<\/a>\u00a0and spcaLA<\/a>, both located at 7700 East Spring Street, Long Beach; and Seal Beach Animal Care Services<\/a>, 1700 Adolfo Lopez Drive, Seal Beach<\/p>\n

And remember\u2014a gift of an animal shouldn\u2019t be a surprise package for the recipient. Be certain that the person on the other end not only wants the particular animal but is knowledgeable about its care.<\/p>\n

A tipple of port for holiday cheer? Port looks brown in the photo but is actually gray. He\u2019s a neutered male about 8 months old. He was found at a market along with his siblings when they were about 7 weeks old. There were a number of dogs and other cats at the foster, and he loved the dogs far better than the cats. His foster mom says that he acts like a dog and will be fine with one in the home. No cats, children or seniors, however. He\u2019ll need someone to play with, though, because he needs lots of attention. SBACC will fill you in further on Port\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n

Operation Santa Paws

Operation Santa Paws seeks donated pet toys for shelters and rescues to improve the health and demeanor of those pets while reducing their stress. This increases the cats and dogs’ chances of being adopted! The simplest toys can make the animals much more comfortable! Cats enjoy rolling toys such as small plastic balls or other batting toys that can be hung from cage doors, while dogs tend to prefer items like the heavy-duty Kong rubber chew toy. And there are lots of other items that shelters and rescues can use! See locations of drop boxes, wish lists and delivery instructions\u00a0here<\/i>. If you want to have a great experience with shelter pets, drop by any of the shelters. Suggested donations and locations of the donation boxes and shelters can be found here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The grassroots free spay\/neuter organization<\/b> Fix Long Beach invites you to make an appointment for your unfixed dog or get a voucher for your cat! And we have lots of spaces for male dogs! Come and get \u2018em!<\/p>\n

Guidelines are as follows:<\/p>\n

  1. Low-income Long Beach residents only unless you have a pit bull! (We offer free spay\/neuter for pitties in surrounding cities.) If you don\u2019t qualify (annual salary $30,000 or lower), please Google \u201clow cost spay\/neuter\u201d along with your zip code, and have your pet fixed at one of the suggested clinics.<\/li>\n
  2. Book an appointment ASAP. Standbys are welcome. Vouchers will be given to any attendee whose pet cannot be served that day.<\/li>\n
  3. If you have called or made a previous appointment, please check your voice mail for messages (be sure that it\u2019s set up). You must call back to confirm your appointment or your spot will be given away.<\/li>\n
  4. If you are 15 minutes late for your appointment, your spot will be given to someone waiting on standby. If you fail to show up for two consecutive appointments, you will be denied future service.<\/li>\n
  5. Fix Long Beach also offers the following services from 9:00AM\u2013:00PM:\n

Whether you come as standby or with an appointment, do not give your pet anything to eat or drink after 12:01AM. Dogs must be on leashes and cats must be in carriers that are specifically pet carriers! No paper bags or suitcases, please! <\/b>There are no walls in the park, and we want you to ensure your pet\u2019s safety! If you don\u2019t own a carrier, pet supply stores like Petco and PetSmart carry inexpensive cardboard ones; they run on the average of $8.<\/p>\n

      Fix Long Beach also has a wish list for pet items to give to our client as a thank-you for helping to lower our shelter euthanasia rate and prevent the birth of more unwanted kittens and puppies.<\/p>\n
