{"id":2242,"date":"2015-11-03T19:34:29","date_gmt":"2015-11-03T19:34:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lbpost.com\/articles\/life\/arts-culture\/author-sandra-cisneros-talks-about-forgiving-her-mother-immigration-and-the-need-for-more-latino-writers\/"},"modified":"2015-11-03T19:34:29","modified_gmt":"2015-11-03T19:34:29","slug":"author-sandra-cisneros-talks-about-forgiving-her-mother-immigration-and-the-need-for-more-latino-writers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/art\/author-sandra-cisneros-talks-about-forgiving-her-mother-immigration-and-the-need-for-more-latino-writers","title":{"rendered":"Author Sandra Cisneros Talks About Forgiving Her Mother and Immigration at MOLAA Appearance in Long Beach"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-44867\" style=\"vertical-align: top;\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/altar5.JPG\" alt=\"altar5\" width=\"620\" height=\"827\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI became a writer thanks to a mother who was unhappy being a mother,\u201d author Sandra Cisneros told a crowd of nearly 300 at the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) in Long Beach over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The author, reciting an excerpt from the essay <em>An Ofrenda For My Mother<\/em>, off of her latest book, <em>A House of My Own: Stories From My Life<\/em>, described her mother as an aspiring artist trapped within the confines of household duties as a wife and mother to seven children.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Because my mother needed to fortify her spirit, every weekend she herded us to museums, concerts in Grant Park and the library,&#8221; Cisneros said. &#8220;I used to think this was for our sake, but now I realize it was for hers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Elvira Cordero Cisneros\u2014who died in 2007 at the age of 78\u2014loved the opera, Pearl Buck novels and could sing and draw, the author said.<\/p>\n<p>Guests of the afternoon reading and book signing on Halloween were also treated to a Dia de los Muertos-inspired art installation titled, <em>A Room of Her Own<\/em>, created by Cisneros, with help from Texan artist Carolina Rubio, in honor of her mother.<\/p>\n<p>The process of creating the ofrenda allowed Cisneros to understand and forgive her mother, she said.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright size-full wp-image-44868\" style=\"float: right;\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/altar4.JPG\" alt=\"altar4\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The offering featured photos, candles and blouses hanging from the ceiling, as well as neatly placed flowers representing Elvira\u2019s love for gardening.<\/p>\n<p>The altar took the shape of a bed. According to Cisneros, her mother never had a room of her own until the last 10 years of her life.<\/p>\n<p>Cisneros&#8217; latest book is the ninth since her award-winning 1984 coming-of-age novel <em>The House on Mango Street<\/em>, weaving together an autobiography through a compilation of stories about her life and the places she\u2019s lived.<\/p>\n<p>The Chicago-born author, now living in Mexico, said that though not every place is perfect, she feels the post-9\/11 mentality has made her fearful for people of color, immigrants and the working class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a scary time to be any of the above in the United States of America,\u201d Cisneros said. \u201cI just came from Phoenix.
