The art of cooking BBQ is a test of skill and patience for any pitmaster but, for the vegan chef, it can be a humbling experience. Finding the right balance of smokiness, flavor and tenderness all the while trying to recreate the taste and texture of meat without the meat, means a lot can go wrong.<\/p>\n

Proving that it can be done deliciously is local vegan eatery, Leaf Over Beef<\/a>, which is hosting a pop-up event Tuesday, Dec. 29 from 6 to 10 p.m. at 623 West Pacific Coast Highway.<\/p>\n

Traditional BBQ flavors are reimagined in Mexican-style entrees\u2014tacos, burritos, quesadillas\u2014alongside classic southern comforts of smoked vegan meats, burgers, sandwiches and wings. Smoked vegan entrees, slathered in their special BBQ sauce, range from $12 to $15. And, loaded with hearty helpings of plant-based mac ‘n cheese and coleslaw, the entrees are easily filling enough for two.<\/p>\n

Those looking to get a feel for all their smoked BBQ offerings can try their BBQ sampler platter for $25.<\/p>\n

As if the sheer volume of their offerings wasn’t enticing enough, there’s also an entire menu dedicated to a plant-based interpretation of the epitome of southern comfort: fried chicken. Think fried chicken wings, sandwiches, BBQ chicken fries, the works.<\/p>\n
