{"id":23,"date":"2019-05-31T12:00:02","date_gmt":"2019-05-31T19:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/?p=999952115"},"modified":"2019-05-31T12:00:02","modified_gmt":"2019-05-31T19:00:02","slug":"new-sculpture-in-gumbiner-park-a-high-five-to-long-beach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/art\/new-sculpture-in-gumbiner-park-a-high-five-to-long-beach","title":{"rendered":"New sculpture in Gumbiner Park a &#8216;High Five&#8217; to Long Beach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A colorful new sculpture by local artist Jorge Mujica has been installed at Gumbiner Park in Long Beach for the public to enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>The title, \u201cLong Beach High Five,\u201d echoes Mujica\u2019s appreciation for the city, he said, while the aesthetic is inspired by the Aztec monolith, <a href=\"https:\/\/mexico1012.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/09\/a2584__national-museum-of-anthropology.jpg\">Tlaloc<\/a>, which sits outside the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt the parallel of my artwork and that of my ancestors was important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is Mujica\u2019s first public art project; the City of Long Beach worked with the Museum of Latin American Art to commission the piece.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLong Beach has so much talent to offer and it is important for our community to feel connected to the improvements in our City,\u201d said Long Beach Public Works Executive Assistant Jennifer Carey. \u201cA local artist has a more unique and specialized perspective of the City and is able to connect more with the surrounding community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Viewers can trace the design\u2019s curvatures to find multiple Long Beach landmarks, including the Queen Mary, Gerald Desmond Bridge and Art Theatre.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_999951846\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-999951846\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-999951846 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/0528-Art-1--687x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"894\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-999951846\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Artist Jorge Mujica&#8217;s sculpture \u201cLong Beach High Five\u201d at Gumbiner Park in Long Beach, Monday, May 28, 2019. Cordova.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cFrom design, the size, and thickness of the aluminum, to the industrial paint, to the over-the-top platform and fence, which the city insisted on, everything about this [process] has been state of the art,\u201d Mujica said.<\/p>\n<p>For the past three years, Mujica has been bringing local and international artists to exhibit in Long Beach through his modest studio space in the East Village, Creative Arts Coalition to Transform Urban Space (CACtTUS). Before that, he worked out of an Art Exchange studio and was also a studio artist at MADE by Millworks.<\/p>\n<p>He continues to pursue his Free Standing Painting (FSP) concept.
