Times are tough for the city’s last standing independent movie theater, The Art Theatre, which hasn’t seen an audience in nearly a year. Facing an uncertain future, in December<\/a>\u00a0the theater hosted a fundraising event they dubbed “Curbside Concessions,” as a way to generate a little revenue.<\/p>\n

Fans of the Art really came through.<\/p>\n

“We sold out every kernel of popcorn, all candy and all merch and raised $4,000 for the Art Theatre,” said Kerstin Kansteiner, owner and board secretary of the theater.<\/p>\n

Kansteiner said the money helped pay for a few bills, and one month’s salary for their only remaining employee, general manager Ryan Ferguson.<\/p>\n

Still, until the venue can host crowds once again, the theater is still without a means to pay the bills. While the Art operates as a nonprofit, the owners of the space, Kansteiner and her husband\/partner Jan van Dijs, are still paying the overhead costs and mortgage.<\/p>\n

In hopes that the city might support them once again, “Curbside Concessions” has a returned for Valentine’s Day Weekend. On Saturday, Feb. 13 from 2 to 4 p.m., locals can pick up bundles of popcorn, candy and other refreshments, including wine, you can pre-order online. All of the profits will go to the Art Theatre.<\/p>\n

To purchase a concession bundle, book your purchase online<\/a>. Patrons can pick up their goodies from the back entrance of the theater\u2014easiest access is from St. Louis Street\u2014where Ferguson and several other Art Theatre board members will be on-site to deliver the bundles.<\/p>\n
