Pretty much the perfect weekend. All except Sunday. We got nothing for Sunday. Monday, we got. But Sunday, no. Sunday is for suckers.<\/p>\n<p>You know, speaking of Sundays, it&#8217;s none of my business whether you believe in a higher power or karma or any sort of order to the world\/universe\/Celestial Being&#8217;s Fevered Dream; none of my business at all. Still, I would like to propose that there are times when matters do pull together from this mish-mash recognizable as life into a blessed little offering called &#8220;justice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Really. I witnessed it. Last week. Wednesday. Six-ish. It was around then that my dear friend and Mary Kay consultant,\u00a0Asia Morris, approached me sheepishly. By sheepishly, imagine a sheep, utterly vanquished, completely void of anything approaching principles, or a spine, with eyes the color of defeat.<\/p>\n<p>As you may know, my dear friend and food-taster, Asia Morris, had long ago barged herself into this column, committing the journalistic equivalent of squatting\u2014i.e.\u00a0<em>squatalism\u2014<\/em>something for which I had forgiven her. She repaid me for this kindness by questioning my right to exist, wondering how I slept at night and constantly suggesting that I habitually missed deadlines.<\/p>\n<p>Why would she do this? Though Asia is a dear friend and godmother to my pet rat, even those closest to her will allow that she is duplicitous and unpredictable, you know, like a sheep. And, the bit about deadline, well, that just came out of nowhere, though, I suppose one could argue it had something to do with the fact that as I write these words this column is\u2014lemme check my watch\u2014a day and a half late.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, it was last Wednesday, six-ish, Asia, all sheepish and broken, came to me and admitted that she would be, wait for it, be missing deadline with her &#8220;The 7&#8221; column. This was actually the second or third time she told me she would be missing deadline. I, of course, was magnanimous and told her it was OK. I believe she used terms like &#8220;Whatever&#8221; and &#8220;You know, a rat isn&#8217;t really a pet if it&#8217;s just running around your kitchen at all hours of the night.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As you can see, Asia speaks in riddles. Typical sheep move. I prefer rats. And pigs. This year, outside the creative agency\u2019s offices, in the historic Psychic Temple building, is their latest offering: a<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0giant, digital slot machine that represents the wealth, luck and prosperity attached to this, the Year of the Pig.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You can walk by any time, pull the red-knobbed lever for a chance to win a scoop of ice cream from the excellent Long Beach Creamery. When the machine was activated, Feb. 5, Intertrend CEO Julia Huang said she wanted to &#8220;encourage street-level interaction with our annual installation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was vandalized twice, the first two days.<\/p>\n<p>First, the lever was damaged and then the black box containing the mechanicals for the machine was stolen off the wall to which it was bolted.<\/p>\n<p>The slot machine is being repaired and supposed to be up and spinning this weekend. Huang says she still wants to &#8220;encourage street level interaction, [I] believe strongly that we deserve nice things. &#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So, if you&#8217;re in the neighborhood, go by and try your luck. Please resist the urge to pillage.<\/p>\n<p><i>The installation is located at Intertrend Communications, 228 E. We&#8217;ve been running the contest for weeks and weeks and have received so many great concepts for a new mascot for the school. We will be recognizing all artists during the broadcast and giving out awards in four different categories, including the winner of our readers&#8217; vote which attracted more than 3,800 responses.<\/p>\n<p>Now that Cal State Long Beach itself is running a contest to find a new mascot, it may be that some of the contestants from this contest will find their way into that very official contest and end up a winner. Tune in!<\/p>\n<h4><strong>SATURDAY<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-999938146\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Judith-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1832\" height=\"1362\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) will host a panel discussion today from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on\u00a0the\u00a0work of artist\u00a0Judithe\u00a0Hernandez, who is presently the subject of the exhibition &#8220;Judithe Hernandez: A Dream is the Shadow of Something Real.&#8221;\u00a0Joining\u00a0Hern\u00e1ndez\u00a0are Dr. Charlene Villase\u00f1or Black, Professor of Ibero-American Art and Chicano\/a Studies at UCLA and Dr. Cristina Castellano Gonz\u00e1lez, Research Professor at Universidad de Guadalajara in Jalisco, Mexico.\u00a0The\u00a0discussion moderator is Betty D\u00e1vila, Executive Director of Self-Help Graphics and Art.<\/p>\n<p>Hernandez\u00a0was born in Los Angeles and was\u00a0the\u00a0only female member of Los Four,\u00a0the\u00a0seminal and influential collective of artists who helped launch\u00a0the\u00a0Chicano Art and Los Angeles Mural Movements of\u00a0the\u00a01960s and 70s. She is regarded as one of\u00a0the\u00a0important visual artists of\u00a0the\u00a0period and has exhibited extensively in\u00a0the\u00a0United States, Europe, and Mexico, and continues to chart an unprecedented path as an artist, educator and community leader.<\/p>\n<p>Her evocative portraits of women navigating invented landscapes\u2014a style she has developed over the last 40 years\u2014are enshrouded in symbols from a vast lexicon of Western and pre-Columbian art, as well as an encrypted personal iconography.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Museum of Latin America Art is located at 628 Alamitos Avenue. You don&#8217;t have to pay to get into the event, but you do have to buy tickets that you then exchange for your sugar fix, you know, like money. You can get 12 tickets for 10 bucks. Sweet!<\/p>\n<p><em>The event starts at\u00a011 a.m. and you can snag your tickets in front of the Chase Bank at 5200 E. 2nd St.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also going to be contests like the homemade chocolate dessert contest (noon to 1 p.m.) and the Hoff&#8217;s Hut Chocolate Pie eating contest (3 to 4 p.m.), an event that promises to be equal parts delicious and gross, i.e.<em> grosslicious!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Belmont Shore Chocolate Festival will take place on 2nd St., you know, where all the stuff is. It&#8217;s kind of like <em>Ghost<\/em>, just totally different.<\/p>\n<p>And the sip part, well, that&#8217;s a little something to free up the artistic spirit.<\/p>\n<p>The event is for people between the ages of 25 and 40.
