The Queen Mary designed and constructed by the P2S\/MHPSE team.<\/em><\/p>\n Local architectural and engineering firms are gearing up to put their design skills to the test for the second annual Long Beach CANstruction Competition to take place on Thursday, September 17. Over 10,000 lbs. of canned goods will be used to construct the 10\u2019 x 10\u2019 x 10\u2019 structures and will be donated to local nonprofit Food Finders food rescue\/bank to help alleviate hunger within the Long Beach community.<\/p>\n According to the May 2015 article<\/a>, CANstruction events have been held in over 140 cities across the globe, resulting in 15 million pounds of canned food collected for the cause.<\/p>\n Five teams composed from seven local architectural and engineering firms make up this year’s participants: Environ Architecture partnering with California Resources Corp., Moffatt & Nichol Engineers, C\/A Architects, P2S Engineering partnering with MHP Structural Engineers and SCS Engineering.<\/p>\n “Food Finders is excited to be the beneficiary of the second annual Long Beach CANstruction,\u201d said Diana Lara, VP of Operations of Food Finders, in a statement. \u201cThis unique event will heighten awareness of food insecurity in our community and will play an important role in helping to feed the hungry in our own backyard.”<\/p>\n The completed structures will be on display to the public starting Friday, September 18 and ending Sunday, September 27. Those who visit the Landmark Square Building are encouraged to bring can or two of their own to use as \u201cvotes\u201d for their favorite CANstructed work of art.<\/p>\n Visitors can place their cans in the Food Finders supply bins located next to each structure resulting in a \u201cPeople\u2019s Choice\u201d award, while additional awards including \u201cStructural Ingenuity,\u201d \u201cBest Use of Labels,\u201d \u201cBest Meal\u201d and \u201cJuror\u2019s Favorite\u201d will be chosen by a panel of local judges following the exhibition.<\/p>\n “Our five talented teams have spent months designing their entries and are allowed only 12 hours to meticulously stack and color-coordinate their cans into ingenious feats of design\u201d, said Greg Sabin of terri henry marketing LLC, who represents Food Finders and organized the event, in a statement. \u201cThe ultimate donation of thousands of cans of food to feed the hungry in our community makes it all worthwhile to the teams.\u201d<\/p>\n CANstruction\u00ae Long Beach 2015 is sponsored by the Long Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau, SCAN Health Plan, Sweatpants Media, the Press Telegram and S&W Beans, who donated 510 cases of product for the build teams to use in their designs.<\/p>\n For more information on CANstruction Long Beach, click here<\/a>;
