{"id":25119,"date":"2021-06-24T09:00:58","date_gmt":"2021-06-24T16:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/hi-lo\/?p=30000020836"},"modified":"2021-06-24T16:24:03","modified_gmt":"2021-06-24T23:24:03","slug":"aquarium-of-the-pacific-tiktok-social-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/aquarium-of-the-pacific-tiktok-social-media","title":{"rendered":"Ollie the sea otter&#8217;s cute and he knows it: Behind the Aquarium of the Pacific&#8217;s viral TikTok account"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ollie the sea otter, Harpo the sea lion and the Aquarium of the Pacific\u2019s 12,000 other adorable critters have won the hearts of the public through a phone screen.<\/p>\n<p>In the world of the Aquarium\u2019s now-viral TikTok account, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@aquariumpacific\/video\/6962617522235444485?lang=en&amp;is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1\">penguins march with rainbow flags<\/a> in a Pride Parade (1.4 million views), Harpo, the aquarium\u2019s social media star, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@aquariumpacific\/video\/6959007004027407622?lang=en&amp;is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1\">belts out<\/a> in song to pop punk rock (405,900 views), and\u2014the post that fueled the account\u2019s rise in popularity at the start of the pandemic\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@aquariumpacific\/video\/6840582675401690373?lang=en&amp;amp;is_copy_url=1&amp;amp;is_from_webapp=v1\">an octopus eats a toy boat loaded with mussels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Madeline Walden, the aquarium\u2019s 29-year-old social media curator\u2014and the woman behind it all\u2014isn\u2019t striving for perfection, but rather authenticity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to make learning fun,\u201d she said. \u201cWe want to make it enticing to everybody, no matter what your education level is or, or where you are in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The local aquarium\u2019s TikTok following has grown to an astounding 2.3 million, more than any other aquarium or zoo in the country, Walden said.<\/p>\n<p>She started the account in January 2020, just before the pandemic. The marketing team was supportive of the decision, she said, recognizing the potential of the sometimes controversial app.<\/p>\n<p>The account had a mere 160 followers through March 2020, and then came the silly octopus video, set to intense \u201cJaws\u201d-like music, which boosted the aquarium\u2019s account immediately to 100,000 followers.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tiktok-embed\" cite=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@aquariumpacific\/video\/6840582675401690373\" data-video-id=\"6840582675401690373\" data-embed-from=\"oembed\" style=\"max-width:605px; min-width:325px;\">\n<section> <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"@aquariumpacific\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@aquariumpacific?refer=embed\">@aquariumpacific<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>We call this \u201cKraken Enrichment\u201d \ud83d\udc19\ud83d\udea4 <a title=\"learnontiktok\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/learnontiktok?refer=embed\">#LearnOnTikTok<\/a> <a title=\"tiktokpartner\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/tiktokpartner?refer=embed\">#TikTokPartner<\/a> <a title=\"aquariumofthepacific\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/aquariumofthepacific?refer=embed\">#aquariumofthepacific<\/a><\/p>\n<p> <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"\u266c Embrace Chaos - Daniel Ciurlizza\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/music\/Embrace-Chaos-6777270252842534914?refer=embed\">\u266c Embrace Chaos &#8211; Daniel Ciurlizza<\/a> <\/section>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>One of the account\u2019s most viewed videos, currently at 14 million, features Ollie the sea otter munching on a heart-shaped, frozen clam \u201ccookie\u201d for Valentine\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOllie, you are otterly adorable,\u201d reads the robotic speech of TikTok\u2019s automated text-to-voice feature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know,\u201d replies Ollie\u2019s voice-over (and he\u2019s not wrong).<\/p>\n<p>TikTok is a video-sharing app owned by Chinese company ByteDance that allows users to share 15- to 60-second videos that often capitalize on trending music or jokes.<\/p>\n<p>Devising mini narratives about sea otters, sea lions, penguins and other living creatures to both educate and entertain seemed like a perfect fit, even when the aquarium sometimes has to deal with the sad side of their business, such as when <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/news\/maggies-sea-otter-aquarium-of-the-pacific-dies\">Maggie the sea otter died<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have these wonderful days of triumphs and celebrations, like the fun birthday parties and the feline singing contest,\u201d said Walden. \u201cWe also have really down days when we unfortunately lose animals, because that&#8217;s part of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While some videos are speedily produced to hop on a TikTok trend, which can change by the day, other videos take a couple of weeks to formulate.<\/p>\n<p>Walden\u2019s animal expertise has mostly come from learning on the job. She collaborates and brainstorms with the animal care department, constantly aiming to make each idea funnier, or reach even farther, while utilizing the team\u2019s vast marine life knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>On the aquarium\u2019s TikTok, you can find videos ranging from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@aquariumpacific\/video\/6960083188244860166?lang=en&amp;is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1\">\u201cWhy do sea lions have black teeth?\u201d<\/a> explainer, which has accumulated 25.8 million views, to Harpo explaining his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@aquariumpacific\/video\/6942972133937007878?lang=en&amp;is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1\">skincare routine<\/a> (a sustainable seafood diet, and gentle saltwater exfoliation), racking up 531,000 views.<\/p>\n<p>Walden said it is an honor to tell these stories, particularly about animals who have spent the majority of their lives at the aquarium.<\/p>\n<p>She understands her audience (she\u2019s spent hours utilizing the app herself), and she knows they want authenticity and the confirmation that life isn&#8217;t always picture-perfect.<\/p>\n<p>Her strategy is working.<\/p>\n<p>The aquarium has amassed 40.8 million \u201clikes\u201d total, but Walden\u2019s intent isn\u2019t just focused on numbers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10000046849\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10000046849\" style=\"width: 2000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10000046849\" src=\"https:\/\/img.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/23144319\/AOP-TIKTOK_3055.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1345\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10000046849\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harpo the sea lion barks for Madeline Walden, assistant social media manager at the Aquarium of the Pacific, Wednesday, June 23, 2021. Photo by Brandon Richardson.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She\u2019s proud of the account\u2019s success, to be sure, but she\u2019s even more proud of the connections that the app has been able to forge, connecting people across the world since the account\u2019s formation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re seeing comments saying, \u2018I live in the U.K. and I&#8217;ve never heard of your aquarium, you&#8217;re on my bucket list now,\u2019 and \u2018I grew up in Long Beach, and now I live on the other side of the world, and how wonderful that I am able to follow my hometown aquarium on social media.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walden is a Long Beach local herself and spent her childhood enjoying field trips and family excursions to the aquarium. She has now been employed at the aquarium for five years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe metrics and the numbers, they&#8217;re obviously great and awesome, but to me, it&#8217;s those connections that mean so much more, because those are people who are ultimately going to stay connected with us, and hopefully come back to visit one day,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Walden, who met her husband on MySpace and her bridesmaids on Tumblr, is no stranger to the power that social media has to connect, and hones this ability to create engaging content that makes science accessible.<\/p>\n<p>According to Walden, starring animals and allowing their charisma to shine through has bridged this gap between the aquarium and the public, during a year when access to the aquarium was severely limited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously this past year has brought a lot of hardship to the aquarium, but I really had this light in the dark with being able to create on TikTok and to connect to that
