{"id":25772,"date":"2021-08-14T09:00:22","date_gmt":"2021-08-14T16:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/hi-lo\/?p=30000021583"},"modified":"2021-08-15T18:41:43","modified_gmt":"2021-08-16T01:41:43","slug":"in-pictures-our-local-beaches-the-story-of-the-earth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/in-pictures-our-local-beaches-the-story-of-the-earth","title":{"rendered":"IN PICTURES: Our local beaches\u2014&#8217;the story of the earth&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here in Long Beach we sit at the edge of the continent, with nothing between our streets and buildings and the wide Pacific Ocean but a buffer of sand that makes up our namesake\u2019s long beach.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel Carson, the poetic science and nature writer, noted that \u201cIn every outthrust headland, in every curving beach, in every grain of sand there is the story of the earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s true: Sandy beaches everywhere are made up of rocks, boulders and mountains, eroded and ground down and washed along rivers to the sea over thousands, perhaps millions, of years before finally washing up to shore where they become the foundation for recreation, leisure, meditation and wonder.<\/p>\n<p>This month, Post photographers Thomas R.
