It\u2019s one way the majority-male group of muralists are ensuring the duration of the show is balanced with female talent.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"NyA6ZvQbQI\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/hi-lo\/art\/warehouse-art-show-long-beach\">Artists take matters into their own hands to put on massive mural show<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Artists take matters into their own hands to put on massive mural show&#8221; &#8212; the Hi-lo\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/hi-lo\/art\/warehouse-art-show-long-beach\/embed\/#?secret=d6FK9jbQjk#?secret=NyA6ZvQbQI\" data-secret=\"NyA6ZvQbQI\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles-based artist Allison Bamcat, who was the only woman to paint a mural for &#8220;Hello, Welcome,&#8221; which opened earlier this month, was given the task of organizing &#8220;Tooth and Nail,&#8221; where artists\/competitors will be pitted against each other during a 90-minute live art battle using three colors\u2014accompanied by music\u2014fighting &#8220;tooth and nail\u201d for the loudest cheers from the crowd, which will be gauged with a decibel meter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re hoping that bringing this much talent, specifically talented female and female-identifying artists, we can bring more exposure to women in the underground and street art scenes,\u201d Bamcat said. \u201cWe\u2019ve always been here, and when we\u2019re given space to perform our skills, we can change the game entirely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, artists were asked on Instagram to show their interest in competing; Bamcat said she and the team \u201ctruly agonized\u201d over selecting just three out of the more than 20 people who wanted to participate. The group chose emerging artists\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/alepsis.h\/\">Alepsis Hernandez<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mrbbaby\/\">Michelle Ruby<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/crissellem\/\">Crisselle M.<\/a>, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/allisonbamcat\/\">Bamcat <\/a>herself will be competing as the fourth.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-999936826\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/image1-970x970.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we want a crowd to come out, we really wanted to showcase artists that are still building their following so they can celebrate the success at &#8216;Hello, Welcome&#8217; with us,\u201d Bamcat said. \u201cIt\u2019s like bringing on some new family members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The battling artists, to be hosted by Vanessa Acosta and Leticia Gomez, have also been invited to paint parts of the warehouse, while an additional artist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/theobanoth\/\">Hannah Webb<\/a>, will paint one of the pillars. There will also be a DJ set by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/laschicastristes\/\">Las Chicas Tristes<\/a>, drinks provided by PBR, food vendors, merch for sale and new art on the gallery walls.<\/p>\n<p>Learn more about the artists below:<\/p>\n<p>Long Beach-based artist <strong>Alepsis Hernandez<\/strong> paints grayscale portraits, but also knows a thing or two about wielding a spray can, Bamcat said.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Bs6NzjPBXf_\/<\/p>\n<p>Described as \u201ca heavy-hitting muralist and painter\u201d, <strong>Michelle Ruby<\/strong> has painted murals across the U.S., including Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BtHJPv3hyEd\/<\/p>\n<p><strong>Crisselle M.\u2019<\/strong>s illustrations have attitude.
