{"id":260,"date":"2019-01-30T12:50:22","date_gmt":"2019-01-30T20:50:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/?p=999936744"},"modified":"2019-01-30T12:50:22","modified_gmt":"2019-01-30T20:50:22","slug":"4-caribbean-islands-will-be-highlighted-during-black-history-month-event-this-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/art\/4-caribbean-islands-will-be-highlighted-during-black-history-month-event-this-week","title":{"rendered":"4 Caribbean islands will be highlighted during Black History Month event this week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The seventh annual Black History Month event put on by the North Long Beach based Andy Street Community Association will highlight four Caribbean islands at the Expo Arts Center this week.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cYesterday, Today &amp; Tomorrow\u201d three-day event will include art, dance, music, food, panel discussions and the recognition of community leaders starting Thursday, Jan. 31.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really an education and multicultural experience I try to bring every year so the whole community can enjoy,\u201d said Andy Street\u2019s Executive Director LaVerne Duncan.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the event will feature exhibits focusing on the Caribbean islands of Jamaica, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, along with Saint Croix, a U.S. territory in the Virgin Islands.<\/p>\n<p>The festivities begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday with a welcome reception hosted by the LGBTQ Center of Long Beach and Black Lesbians United. RSVPs are encouraged.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_999936755\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-999936755\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-999936755\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/schedule-of-events-969x1266.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"784\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-999936755\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Complete schedule of events for the seventh annual Black History Month event &#8220;Yesterday, Today &amp; Tomorrow&#8221; taking place at the Expo Arts Center Jan. 31-Feb 2.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The only paid activity is a CEO Diversity Awards luncheon on Friday that will cost $25 per person. Duncan said most of the money will go toward the purchase of the food, with the remaining funds going to Andy Street\u2019s youth programs that focus on leadership, entrepreneurship, art and health.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday evening, Councilman Al Austin, whose district office is inside the Expo Arts Center, will officially open two exhibits, Caribbean Heritage and Forgotten Images, featuring nearly 1,000 artifacts spanning centuries of the African American experience.<\/p>\n<p>Long Beach community leaders from various sectors will also be honored in a \u201cWall of Excellence,\u201d Duncan said. The late Long Beach State hall of famer, police detective and LGBT advocate <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/news\/city-council-to-close-in-memory-of-kim-maddox-lgbt-champion-and-former-detective\/\">Kimberly Maddox<\/a> will also be honored.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday will be a \u201cyouth day\u201d of sorts, said Duncan, with musical performances by students from Long Beach Unified School District, the Jack &amp;
