{"id":264,"date":"2019-01-28T16:25:03","date_gmt":"2019-01-29T00:25:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/?p=999936439"},"modified":"2019-10-09T14:46:22","modified_gmt":"2019-10-09T21:46:22","slug":"artist-honors-hip-hop-history-and-hispanic-heritage-new-mural","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/art\/artist-honors-hip-hop-history-and-hispanic-heritage-new-mural","title":{"rendered":"Artist honors hip hop history and Hispanic heritage with new mural in Long Beach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[easy-image-collage id=999936470]<\/p>\n<p>Cars on Redondo Avenue near 10th Street noisily speed by on a Saturday afternoon, as artist Erick Guadarrama works on a larger-than-life portrait of Tito Rodriguez, the Long Beach native, philanthropist and music producer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I feel like he\u2019s part of hip hop history, a Hispanic guy that should be credited,\u201d said Guadarrama.<\/p>\n<p>Growing up in Long Beach, Rodriguez lived next door to Goldie Loc, one-third of the hip hop group <em>Tha Eastsidaz<\/em>\u2014made up of former Death Row Records artists Snoop Dogg and Tray Deee who left the label to start their own group. The two worked together in the &#8217;90s hip hop scene, Goldie Loc as a rapper and Rodriguez as a producer.<\/p>\n<p>Later on, Rodriguez started a punk band called The Pricks and has since dipped his hand in many creative projects, but for the past several years, his goals have focused more on philanthropy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_999936459\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-999936459\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-999936459 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1020769-970x648.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-999936459\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Long Beach native and music producer Tito Rodriguez stands in front of his unfinished portrait at i-nhale Smoke Shop. Photo by Asia Morris.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In December, Rodriguez was given a certificate of recognition by the City of Long Beach for his work as the &#8220;Hood Santa\u201d and participating in the 8th Annual Diamond Christmas Toy Giveaway at the Women\u2019s and Children\u2019s Clinic, put on by Local Hearts Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>As one of the foundation\u2019s founders, he was given the nickname while engaging with the local community in Long Beach and South Central L.A.;\u00a0visiting homes to give away gifts to kids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a pretty cool transition to go from making music to \u2018hero work\u2019 as I like to call it, or trying to help people that need a little help during the holidays,\u201d Rodriguez said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"KWjb7Q8cqN\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/news\/city\/in-pictures-hood-santa-and-diamond-supply-give-away-1500-toys-to-children\">IN PICTURES: Hood Santa and Diamond Supply give away 1,500 toys to children<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;IN PICTURES: Hood Santa and Diamond Supply give away 1,500 toys to children&#8221; &#8212; Long Beach Post News\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/news\/city\/in-pictures-hood-santa-and-diamond-supply-give-away-1500-toys-to-children\/embed\/#?secret=ut1eeEgJu2#?secret=KWjb7Q8cqN\" data-secret=\"KWjb7Q8cqN\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Guadarrama combines hip hop, Hispanic heritage and Long Beach culture in the new Eastside mural at i-nhale Smoke Shop, a small business owned by military veteran and arts supporter Robert Hernandez. Guadarrama has painted many murals around town, including multiple portraits of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a privilege for these artists to come out and do their artwork with my shop as their canvas,\u201d said Hernandez. \u201cI\u2019m not very artistic, but seeing these guys create, to me, is like magic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another local artist, known as \u201cHowdy Y\u2019all,\u201d perfects his West Coast- and block-style letters, &#8220;LBC&#8221;, while a small group of friends and family spend time in the tiny parking lot, chatting and watching the process as the sun begins to set.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_999936454\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-999936454\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-999936454\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/P1020697-970x648.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-999936454\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left, i-nhale Smoke Shop owner Robert Hernandez, artist J. Photo by Asia Morris.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve gotten <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BtOnU1ohsZb\/\">platinum plaques<\/a> for my music, and gold plaques,&#8221; Rodriguez said. &#8220;This is a different type of feeling, you know, this is at home, so it feels good. This is where I\u2019m from, born and raised Long Beach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those wanting to check out the mural at 1055 Redondo Ave. can expect it to be completed by Saturday, February 2, Guadarrama said.
